Wippermann Connex quick link issues with chain noise

I know that these Wippermann quick links are directional. I believe if you have it backwards where the deeply contoured part faces inward, the chain will click/chirp/no fully engage certain cassette cogs.

The thing is, I believe I have it installed correctly on my Shimano 9x3 bike and I'm experiencing a situation where the chain is jumping out of contact with the 12 tooth and 13 tooth cogs on my SRAM 9 speed cassette. The chain is a Campagnolo C-9 which I was told is compatible with Shimano 9 speed systems.

Why don't you do the obvious thing and post a photo?

Hate to step into this pissing contest between you and cx but I've never had success with Wipperman Connex links on Campag C9 chains. On my 9-sp Campag Centaur system I had a click and an occasional skip I couldn't adjust out. Finally changed to a KMC chain with a MissingLink and everything was nice and quiet. Tried the C9 chain and the MissingLink and things were quiet. As soon as I put the Wipperman Connex back in it clicked. Strange thing was the Connex worked fine with the KMC chain, it was nice and quiet, no click or skip. It was just the C9 and Wipperman Connex combo that caused the click.

I've used Campagnolo C9 chains. Don't they just have a link pin you can push in?

The Wippermann links are extremely directional. Get them in upside-down, and everything goes bad.

Ok, so here is a Wippermann link. I actually have two links.

So the point of the "V" in the slot faces the sprockets from whatever angle you are looking.

If you could identify a wear spot on your link, then you could probably grind it down slightly without greatly compromising it. Perhaps paint the link with a dye? Sharpie? Then ride.

Don't leave any sharp cuts that could initiate a crack.

Make sure you carry a spare link.
