Sturmey Archer CS-RK3 with MTB shifters?

The Sturmey Archer CS-RK3 does not come with a shifter and they say that it will work with
" Compatible with standard MTB-ATB left hand shifter for front triple chain-wheel"
I have seen Shimano Left hand FD MTB shifters and STI's used with S-A hubs mentioned here with other S-A three speeds.
Does anyone have experience with this installation? Any models or caveats?
The trigger , thumb shifter and bar end look like they might not go well with my Downtube Dahon style foldy's need to keep fragile parts tucked in safely.
I have not been able to locate S-A 3 speed and Shimano FD indexing shift measures to confirm and had seen warnings about injuring the drive with poor adjustments

Sheldon Brown's Internal-Gear Hub Cable Pull Crib Sheet
was of some help, but is incomplete on this issue.
It was interesting to see Shimano Nexus users with similar questions, though that may have a rotary rather than push rod system for shifting

Sturmey Archer says compatible with standard ATB front shifter. The cable pull is different from the regular SA 3 speed.

Thanks Dan
Appreciate your work and vids
Aaron in Seattle says that the non indexing Left shifters work, and I am trying to sort through which will work .
I'll follow up with what ensues

We have used them to replace missing/broken shifters at our charity shop and they work fine.😉

Wanted to say thanks again to all and hope all are safe.
I ended up using a SHIMANO Acera SL-M310 Rapid Fire Shifter, Left (Black, 3-Speed)
for my SA 3x9 and other than having backwards numbers for the gears it's fine.
with tax from Amazon it was $21.65
It took a few rides to dial in, but has worked well.
It'll need a closer spaced cassette to optimize the ride on my Dahon 20", but that is just housekeeping.
Again thanks
