what is your favorite way to deal with a 90s MTB frame with a 1" threaded stem?

I grabbed a mid-90s Trek 920 bike recently and the frame is in really good condition and the size works, so I plan to move parts over to it from one of my kids' current mountain bikes. She will go from hydraulic disc and an air fork to Vbrakes and rigid, but the kid will use it for twisty river bottom singletrack, so it will work perfectly.

The 920 headset is a 1 1'8" quill style. So the stem is a 1" threaded stem. It is too long and I would like to shorten it while also use some modern style bars(so 31.8mm clamp).

- Does anyone have a favorite replacement 25.4mm threaded MTB stem? It doesnt need to be period correct or from Nitto.
- Should I use a threadless stem converter to then add a threadless stem? If so- any recommendations for ones that are 25.4mm at the wedge nut?
- I could just buy a replacement rigid steel fork with 1 1/8 steerer for $90. The bike was free and all components will move over or be reused, so spending $90 is fine if that is the best option. This fork has 410mm of C-A height which matches the current fork. No issue there. https://www.bikeman.com/CARV-FK410S-S1009-RK.html

Thoughts?
Again- this is for a bike with a threaded steerer that is wider than traditional threaded steerers. It uses a 1"(25.4mm) threaded stem to fit into the steerer tube. Just specifying to eliminate confusion.

I might have something that fits that fork. Do you know what stem length you need?

Did she outgrow the more modern bike?

I just started tinkering with one of my old mountain bikes and will just be using an adapter myself. ITs an experiment for me and i dont know how far i will go with it, so i just ordered an inexpensive adapter and stem from Amazon

Thinking 80mm with 35deg rise?...that is spitballing based on her sitting on it briefly.

Yeah, outgrew it last year. She used her road bike for everything as a result, which was fine, but she did mention how she missed riding the simple singletrack last year. I had looked for a more modern frame that would fit and didnt see anything at a price I wanted to pay. Figure this is going to be perfect. Slap the 1x9 drivetrain on and it will be more than enough for how the bike is used.

Found it, but unfortunately the clamp is only 25.4. Really lightweight and looks almost new, matt black “NL” branded with 80mm reach.

Last photo shows height above min insertion line.

I think I bought it for a [MTB] drop bar conversion but never used it.

panzerwagon thanks for checking! A 31.8mm bar clamp is definitely what I want though.

I am thinking either the new fork or a conversion setup.

I agree that the Profile Design converter would be a good way to go as then you'll get to choose from the huge variety of 1 1/8" threadless stems, whether that's reach, angle, or bar clamp.

I should also add that Specialized often has these crazy discounts directly on their site, e.g., https://www.specialized.com/us/en/tu...=232366-157290

I bought three stems recently of different angle and reach for $20 each.

Look at post #46 here https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...l#post22473486
I made an adapter from a piece of aluminum tube for my clunker.

Interesting! So did you then buy a shim for the threadless stem since the clamp diameter is wider than 1"?

Stems usually come with a shim.

Yeah, I have read that, but I have never received a shim with a stem. Multiple Ritchey, Easton, and Kalloy 7 UL, and then some generic brands too- no shims ever. I just figured it was a crapshoot and I havent won yet.

Well regardless, thats a great looking setup- really smooth transition since it doesnt show the conversion under the threadless stem.
