Cracks in Campagnolo rear mechs

In my search for a reasonably-priced (cough cough) 8 speed Campag rear mech I was looking at completed listings on that auction site. There were four listings for Campag rears with a crack shown and stated in the title. Three of the cracks were in the upper pivot knuckle, right along the top; a fourth was at one of the pin-holes for a parallelogram arm. One of the knuckle cracks was on a (claimed) NOS unit. Given this number I'd bet that some of the units currently listed also have cracks - perhaps unmentioned.

Is this as common as it appears to be? The only other consistently cracked aluminium parts I've noted are Gian Robert right-side crankarms - NONE of them are trustworthy.

I've got two bikes running Campy 8 speed (one Chorus, one Record) and haven't experienced any cracks in the rear mechs.

I've had a Record 8 speed and a first generation Record 9 speed crack at the upper pivot. I read somewhere it's common and they cured the problem with the 2nd generation 9 speed. I've also read that people have used the cracked ones with no dire consequences. I personally wouldn't use them.
