Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Found the squeak

So 2 weeks ago I started to get a squeak coming from the bottom when I pedal up hill or out of the saddle. Since my cleats were pretty worn I replaced them. I also pulled the crank out and greased the bearing and shaft.

It still squeaked.

I noticed if I rotated my feet to take the "float" out the squeak went away.

I have Look Keo cleats and in the past always used the "grip" version, but the ones I put on didn't have the grip. That also had a white plastic, assume teflon, section that contacts the pedals.

So today I installed a set of Keo "Grip" cleats and viola.... no more squeak.

Why do they make them if they squeak?

Yup, I've noticed that squeak from the rubbery bits on some new cleats. I use wax on the friction surfaces and walking pads -- leftover candle wax works fine. Usually does the trick.

Seems like those cleat/pedal mating surfaces squeak less with wear, maybe due to scuffs and accumulation of dust.
