Drilled Univega Arrowpace DT and ST
Hi. Went riding today and towards the end of my ride, I came across 3 bikes left out on the curb. One was a 25-inch univega which, of course, I promptly plucked out of the pile and rolled home while riding my bike. The univega had two angle bars bolted to the down and seat tubes which I will definitely remove. Would you still ride this frame even with the drilled dt and st? A sticker says that the main tubes are 4130 chromoly.

Those are pretty big holes so I would be concerned. I wonder what those brackets were for. Maybe footrests for a child seat mounted on the top tube?

The easiest repair is to braze through/cross tubes in the holes. Or bar stock. A few builders charge more for this feature on new frames. Andy

Somebody drilled that frame with the intention of mounting an engine. I don't think the engine was ever installed.
Since the bike was a freebie, I would go ahead and ride it, but I would not put any more money than necessary in it.

The holes are 3/8-inch in diameter. I do want to ride it just to see if I like it. It is a tall bike though.
Thank you for the replies.

Finished rebuilding this “holey” 1987 univega. Did a short evening test ride. It rides good. It’s tall though (25 inches c-t).

Thanks for the follow up. I like a finish to the thread stories...
Being way large for you I suggest limiting the investment with this bike. Until you move it along wrap tape over the holes to limit water getting inside, and remove that tape when passing this bike to the next person. Andy
