Schwinn Voyaero? What's this?
What can the BF experts tell me about my Schwinn Voyaero? I didn't see it in any of the Schwinn catalogs.
It has a full Dura Ace drivetrain. Seems like a nice bike. I added a Brooks saddle, new headset, NOS freewheel, and pedals from an '80's Trek.

Bikes that clean freak me out. Drivetrain looks completely dry. Cool bike with Viscount brakes no less. Now go get it dirty.

Looks a lot like a '73 World Voyageur with the chromed lugs and most of kit.

That's a first-gen DuraAce crankset with its additional chainguard and Puch also used those on some bikes; they were the only ones who chose the chainguards, I think. Somebody swapped out the original brakes for Viscount centerpulls.

"Voyaero" This model so named for the huge aerodynamic advantage achieved by leaving off the handlebar tape.

I remember Sheldon Brown came up with some great bike related April 1st posts that initially got one thinking that would be cool, then you realize it's April 1st.
Jan Heine over at Rene Herse came up with a very imaginative one this year with
self adjusting / self truing aero spokes that adjust while riding.
Velo Orange came up with one also.
I forget the subject of their 4-1-22 post.
Fun stuff and on occasion I've been fooled for a few moments until I recall the date.

That usage of a .833 diameter stem... that's a April 1st joke that keeps repeating, for me anyway. I'm dealing with the consequences of that, again, right now.

1st generation Dura-Ace was more often spec'd on competition models, so models featuring the guard are more rare. However, other touring oriented models with this feature, that immediately come to mind, are some years of the Panasonic Touring Deluxe and the Volkscycle Mark 100.

A Voyaero is a mashup of a butchered 1975 Voyageur II, and two Viscount Aerospaces (Pro and GP). I saw the Voyageur on CL on my birthday, and my little mind realized I could combine bits into a full 1970's Dura Ace drivetrain.
I previously restored the Pro, and had a $10 GP for replacement parts as needed for the Pro.

Chimps can easily remove wheels and brakes and derailleurs. Chimps can remove crankset bolts. But crank arms? Chimps leave fresh scratches on the backsides indicating they try pulling with whatever's at hand.
Chimps can unscrew headset locknuts, but stems get in the way. Chimps can loosen quill bolts, but never try tapping them to free up the binder. Chimps try stealing handlebars, but bar-end shifters get in the way. Chimps can take off the levers, but are unaware the bodies attach with bolts that unscrew "backwards".
So on the matter of preserving .833 stems and other bits that make a Voyageur a Voyageur, I'm grateful that chimps are limited by chimp minds.
Somebody swapped out the original brakes for Viscount centerpulls.
As for the Dura Ace bits: crankset from Voyageur, front derailleur from Aero GP, shifters from my parts bin, and Crane rear derailleur from Aero Pro (although the original would have been a Schwinn-branded Crane).
Voyaero, whoa whoa whoa whoa (paraphrasing the old Chrysler Plymouth TV commercials!)
