road tire advice
I was cleaning my bike today and noticed a significant cut in the sidewall of my rear tire.
Time for a new tire. I currently have Vittoria Zaffiro Pro Slick 700x25 c tires that came with my
Felt Z-5. I have been happy with them, but I don't have a lot of knowledge about tires. I would guess
they are middle quality, nothing special kind of tires put on a Felt Z-5 to keep the price down.
I ride regularly, 20 - 50 mile rides with small groups. . . I am looking for a reliable, comfortable tire. It
doesn't have to be the lightest, newest technology. Also, not looking to break the bank!
What do people have on their bikes that they are happy with? Looking for a bit of info before I walk into my LBS
and see what they have. Happy to buy locally for the right tire. Any sites on line that have particularly good tire selections?
Thanks in advance.

You'll get a hundred different replies but you want a tire with a high TPI (threads per inch), like 120+. Which one specifically is almost irrelevant, most all of these modern tires are pretty dang good. The higher TPI the more supple it will ride because the casing will have more thread and less rubber. Your current tires are only 60tpi, kind of standard for stock tires because the companies want to save money. Just visit your LBS and look for that.

Specialized has a tire sale on right now, most are two for $40, some are two for $55. I was looking for Roubix Pro but those were cleaned out, ended up with a pair of Turbo Pro 700x25, happy with them so far :-). Looks like I have 382 miles on them. Running 100 psi with 182 lb rider.

A lot of people will say I'm crazy, but if you're not racing and doing fast group rides regularly, I wouldn't spend the 35-40 for the Contis. Probikekit.com has Vittoria Rubino Pros and Pro Slicks for $22.47/tire. They're a bargain at that price.

If you ride in the wet they might not be the best (the slicks at least). I haven't really noticed a problem with them in the wet, but then again I don't bike often while raining, and when it is raining, I try not to find the limits of the tires.
