So maybe you guys need to keep the roughhousing to yourselves and treat our new guys with considerably more respect. That shouldn’t be difficult, you can view how many posts a user has right with his userID. It shouldn’t be difficult to be respectful to ANYONE, but it’s particularly harmful to be rude, nasty, or disrespectful to our newbies. I must admit, this is a particularly pet peeve of BillyD. I sort of see it as bullying, and I hate bullying. Everybody has baggage, that’s just mine. So please be nice to our newbies, they didn’t come here to get insulted or otherwise mistreated. You all had dumb questions when you were new in this game, be patient and let them fire theirs off. If you don’t like a “dumb question”, move on to a different thread. If you see a thread topic that is well worn, like "I'm hunting for a new bike, what frame material is best?" or "what chain lube should I use?", or "do red socks make me faster?", JUST MOVE ON, find another thread more to your liking. Don’t be a locker room bully, don’t be a dick. Be especially nice to our newbies. I’m afraid we must insist.

...did you use your time to travel, or was it a stay at home ? I like to use vacations now for self improvement, like learning a new language, or picking up a new musical instrument. The kazoo is a pretty quick study, and if you are tone deaf, there are always the rhythm instruments.

Banning one of the most helpful and competent professional mechanics from the bike mechanics sub-forum is shooting themselves in both feet.
If you give them $12 a year, that is viewed as a contribution.
If you give them (and their paying 'customers' as well as us dirt-bags) many hours of your time and professional experience, including unvarnished truths not diluted with fake diplomacy, somehow that is regarded as problematic.

Why not take a completely different approach to the problem?
Invite him to moderate the Bicycle Mechanics sub-forum, allow him to move appropriate posts into the forum, and to set the (pre-determined) tone of the discussion. The advice and experience he has to offer can and should be a major asset to BikeForums.

...I used to feel that way about my own contributions there. It's a danger to yourself and others. In the mechanics forum, there has been a long tradition of "comparing the size of your wrench", so to speak. Best bet in there is to limit yourself to one, possibly two, carefully considered replies to the original problem. And to cultivate and curate your ignore list. This has served me pretty well over the past few years. And I'm all about what serves me well.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but from my point of view (having occasionally been on the receiving end, which I do not enjoy), I think his presence in the mechanics sub-forum is (and could continue to be) much more of an asset than it is a liability.
Why not take a completely different approach to the problem?
Invite him to moderate the Bicycle Mechanics sub-forum, allow him to move appropriate posts into the forum, and to set the (pre-determined) tone of the discussion. The advice and experience he has to offer can and should be a major asset to BikeForums.

This reminds me of an Upward youth basketball league I coached in. One of the requirements to coach in that league is the coaches had to officiate 1 of the 6-8 year old games. It gave them a totally different perspective than sitting on the sidelines.

Actually, dual control lever is the term Shimano uses. While STI is a Shimano dual control lever, I'm not certain that every dual control lever meets Shimano's definition of a STI. I suppose I could look that up, but certainly someone else will want that acclaim.
