Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Very good bike for the entry level roadie or possibly a fast light commuter. Very nice bike for the money especially if you want to buy new with dealer support and a lifetime frame warranty. That price is normal low retail.

depends on what you're looking for in a bike.

New? Hard to beat in that price range.

This winter I bought a new 2009 Bianchi Imola steel frame bike with Tiagra (including brifters - not downtube shifters like the Allez) on Ebay for $620. It is a better bike and frame than the Allez. I think it was a shop demo but it still had the stickers on it and the tires and chain looked brand new.

I was toying with the steel Allez but I did better with a little diligence.

I picked one up as a rain bike - the fenders did require a bit of creativity and a few L brackets for installation due to the clearances though. With fenders/mudflaps, there is toe overlap with clips, but it hasn't been an issue with clipless.

It's a pretty fun and classy bike for the price - it's really tempting to bring up the aesthetics with some Thomson goodies and more retro looking components, but it would totally defeat the purpose of a budget bike.

I really like the looks ^

Doesn't it come with 2300 bottom of Shimano components. I would be worry about those, but since they are DT shifters, it might not be too bad.

i had a mid-90's steel allez and was happy to move to an early-90's aluminum cannondale. the allez felt heavy and unresponsive to me.

The 2200 stuff has so far proven to be pretty ok stuff. Riding blind it would be hard to differentiate between 2200 and Sora........

I've had my Steel Allez for a few months now. The shifters are fine (though 'soft' compared to Dura-Ace dt shifters) as is the front derailleur. The rear however does not perform well once it gets dirty, it's quite noticeable.

My money is on a cable issue not a deraileur problem.

I'm actually going to swap out the 2300 with Ultegra derailleurs plus the 10 speed Dura-Ace dt shifters. I'm planning on riding the bike for the Davis double century in May and want the extra two gears.

If anyone wants to know what the steel is real experience is like, ride this frame. It glides like velvet.
