Noise on each pedal stroke?

That's what I'm hearing...a noise on each pedal stroke. Kinda of a clunk, but not too loud.

I've verified crank arms are tight. Nothing seems to be hitting. I can't reproduced it unless I'm riding the bike...it doesn't seem to happen that I can tell if I put bike on rack and spin pedals.

Any ideas?

Does it only happen under pressure? What I mean is, if you are sitting on the bike, but peadling without much force) does it still clunk? Also, does it happen once per pedal rotation? I remember reading a Sheldon Brown article on how many noises that only happen when we're on the bike can be something unrelated to the mechanics of the bike... For example, are you sure a part of your shoe isn't rubbing on the frame or crank arm somewhere? Are you sure your leg isn't hitting the tool pouch under your seat? I know these all seem like obvious things, but sometimes it's just that simple...

When was the last time you overhauled/replaced your pedals?

Yes, I believe its under pressure. If I'm easy pedaling, I don't notice it, but if I'm pedaling under more pressure I notice it. I checked the crank arm because of the SB article.

I'm pretty sure I'm not hitting anything with my shoe/leg. I can almost feel it when it happens (yes, every pedal stroke). It kinda "feels" like there's play in the crank arm, but I can't detect any play....that's just the kind of "feel" it has.

Check your seat/seatpost for bolt tightness. I can't believe how often I track down noises to the seat.

Interesting thought....I'll check that. Ironically I have a new saddle coming this week (finally ordered a Brooks).

I just had the same problem. It sounded like the seat was squeaking. I checked that. I replaced the chain-ring bolts after one broke while I was seeing if they were tight -- later discovering that they should only get about 7 ft-lbs

After none of that worked I swapped pedals and the sound is gone.

that happened to my eggbeater pedals when they needed rebuilding. It was most obvious when standing during hill climbs

I just dealt with a similar problem myself - turned out the pedals weren't torqued sufficiently into the crank arms. When I put a wrench to them the sound disappeared. Almost missed this very easy fix because when I checked the pedals by hand there was no play.
