Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Weekend Rides - Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend!

This is Canada's Thanksgiving Weekend. Thanksgiving is on Monday, October 13th, making it a long weekend.

Here in Australia, however, it is just another weekend. Australia does not have Thanksgiving ... we do, however, have the Melbourne Cup weekend coming up soon, but I'll get to that later.

I will not be doing much cycling this weekend. If the big black cloud outside doesn't do anything nasty I will try to get a ride in today (Friday), but that might be it. Rowan and I are spending a weekend in Melbourne which will likely involve some sight seeing and shopping.

But how about you? Where are you riding this weekend? Is it a long weekend for you? Will you be riding to burn off the turkey dinners? Or has it turned too snowy and cold to ride? Are you riding inside now?

I am, I'm afraid, riding the trainer, unless a major change in the forecast happens. Snow 1-4" tonight, more tomorrow...although right now it is clear and cold.

Maybe it'll miss us.

Actually, it's 4:30 pm on Friday evening.

And I got out for a 12.75 km ride despite the dark clouds.

Rides on Saturday and Sunday, both on the road and around our county, approx. 100kms. Long weekend for us in Canada. Highs around 13 degrees C of 55 F and sunny! Big question mark for a ride on Turkey day, may go for a recovery ride with family.

I'll try to tear myself away from the turkey day festivities on Saturday, maybe Sunday. Weather is supposed to be chilly, but I'm up for a nice fall ride in Muskoka (Ontario,Canada), careful to dodge the questionable long weekend drivers.
Happy Thanksgiving and Columbus day to all.

Going to do a great springbank loop Sat, then a jaunt out to Cochrane via 262 Monday. I hope I don't freeze my butt off its friggen cold with the wind chill. (Which in 2-3 months I'll probably be wishing for temp like this.)

Happy Turkey Day

Holy. I checked your forecast. Minus 2 or 3 all weekend? It was 30 degrees there just a couple of weeks ago. You are the hardcore.
Now I won't complain if I hit showers on my ride to Amsterdam. It's going to be mid-teens.

Have a great long weekend!

I am Canadian, but am going to be in Arizona over the weekend.

I will not be getting any turkey dinner, but I will certainly be riding as much as I can.

Wife and I did 95km with our Ancaster group yesterday. It was a nice paced ride that gave us some time to look at the changing colours.

I had a bonehead crash right our of the gate, probably within 10km's of the start. We coming up to an intersection, I was second in line. Lead rider slowed a tad for the intersection and looked as if he was going to blow through. Not wanting a gap to form I stayed close and was checking for traffic. Saw a car and I guess he saw it first. He jammed his brakes and before I could stop I nwas in his back end. Bounced off his rear chain stay and did the slow speed timber. Couldn't get the foot out so down I went and slammed the hip down hard. Wasn't too sore at first, but the last 20km were a tad painful.

It was a dumb move on all parts. I knew we should be slowing for this intersection, but I followed the lead....Live and Learn!

Today the plan is to go out with the team and do a nice 70km ride, or so...Not sure how I will do on this one. Temps are a little cool this morning, 1C, so there will be many layers...

Monday should be a shorter ride with my wife and anyone else that wants to go...That is if the weather holds out, they are calling for showers now...

Well,

Both Friday and Saturday I rode out to Needle Rock Rec Area here in Arizona.

50 miles round trip, each time.

Today I'm meeting up with friends and riding down to BArtlett Lake and back out again.

40 miles round trip, 4600 feet of climbing in it.

This time tomorrow I'm on a plane home again ......

rode 70km in pumpkin country yesterday. it was cool, about 7 C. Just about to do another 70 km this am, and it's sunny and 5 C just as i'm getting into my kit. it's also oktoberfest here in k-w, so as i make my way out of town, i'll have to dodge the hungover tourists.

gemutlichkeit.

I'll be hittin up the singletrack later. Couple hours of off roading is worth like 10 of road biking. Well, depending on location.

I went for a two hour ride in and around Gatineau Park yesterday - nice ride but there's lots of automobile traffic in the park this time of year. People are out admiring the fall colours and getting in some hikes before winter sets in.

This afternoon I'll be doing a loop in the Gatineau hills around Lake MacGregor and Wakefield. It's a pretty decent day - almost 50 degrees but windy.

Argh, I am frustrated. -10 to -1 Celsius all weekend, it rained all last week so we have a nice base layer of ice under about 3 inches of snow. Unless it burns off today, no bikey for coffeecake. It was 35 degrees C here two weeks ago and I still haven't adjusted to the ridiculous change in temperature. So I'm going to be stuffed full of food and very cranky without any physical outlet. Normal temp for here is about 13 degrees C.

It's fairly mild here in Vancouver, 13 degrees celcius, so I'll be off on a tame 40km ride today.
