Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When To Buy Soon To Be "Obsolete" Parts?

I am running ultegra 6700 on my road bikes. I am sure that sometime in the future, the shifters will need to be replaced.

Given that the new 6800 has been released, does anyone know when leftover but new 6700 shifters will be cheapest?

Looks like they are currently going for approx $275-300 as of now, so I am trying to decide whether to buy now vs wait.

Suggestions??

I don't favor tying up money in spare old model parts for three reasons. First new and used one will be available on ebay essentially forever or for a least as long as any of us care about. Prices will keep getting better and better for a long while. Second the cost of money. Having your money tied up for years is an expensive proposition. Then third, say one of your brifters craps out. That's a great excuse to buy a whole new set with or without a new rear derailleur as necessary. Heck or even rebuild the whole bike at that point. Would that be dollar equivalent? Uh, no, but still an attractive proposition. Besides you can convert one bike and keep the parts to use as needed on the other one. But do you really want to preserve the dating of your bikes forever. I just have never regarded a bicycle as a time capsule to be preserved as purchased.

Shimano has always made parts from old gruppos. You'll see parts on EBAY 9/10 times. There's no need to panic.

Agreed.
I would stock up on consumables such as hoods though.
It's darn near impossible to get proper new 9 speed hoods nowadays although popular/ widespread they were at their prime.
Found this out recently when my mother tasked me with finding new hoods for her weekend roadie with ultegra 6500; had to scrounge a handful of distributors and found a pair that fit, still wasn't the proper set though considering her brifters didn't have flightdeck controls.

What are you worried about with the old shifters? 10 speed compatibility? That shouldn't be a problem for plenty of years yet.

I'll buy stuff on a blow out from time to time. But it has to be a serious, deep discount before I do.

OK I will find something else to worry about.

Thanks for the reality check.

Shimano will continue to produce 10 speed parts for another 3-5 years. You have nothing to worry about. As for ultegra parts, 6700s will only get cheaper used over time.
