Canti Frame with Big Clearance

I know that CX frames were often built around the 33mm tires for racing, and many can clear 35mm, though I was wondering if there are specific frames for use with Canti’s that can clear up to 40mm tires w/o fenders?

50mm tire clearance.

There are various frames thru the years that have the clearance too, so most will be used.
Surly Cross Check
Trek 750 multicross from the 90s
etc
Etc

Yes, the Monstercross would be the prime choice if they are ever back in stock. I wanted one but dicked around until they were gone. I ended up with a decent Bianchi Volpe that clears only 38 in back but easily 43 in front. It's actually a very nice ride on dirt roads and performed better than the rider on a recent excursion I'd call more mtb than gravel.

A new Cross Check frame shouldn't be too hard to come by - several shops near me at least have them in stock, like these guys:

I have Nano 40s on mine, but plenty of folks go wider than that.

A super budget option if you're searching through your local listings is a Retrospec Amok. For a cheap fixie company offering, it's good. Rides very close to a Surly CC, except with annoying dropouts. Clearance for true 45mm tires. I got mine from Amazon returns years ago solely as a low-trail experiement after I found a fork with a short steerer I wanted to use. Absolutely love it, proof it doesn't matter what name is on it; it's how it rides.
That being said, the craftsmenship is pretty bad. The canti bosses are brazed evenly, but the housing stop is positioned to make it harder to setup brakes. The gussets are crooked under the DT, the cast dropouts are so poor that the B-tension screw doesn't hit right. Stock fork was crooked.

BLB Hitchhiker. 700x42mm.

Bit of weight in the frameset. Cromor.

Went there looking for the yellow NOS 54cm? Fort Cross Foco frameset, but someone has grabbed it.

Heck, I just built one up for winter from an old mountain bike. What more should I want? gotta love those gorgeous Klein frames - Trek should really bring them back.

Some folks like to call Cross Checks "obsolete" but I sure like the used one I bought in 2020. I'm running 700x42 tires with plenty of room to spare.

My wife has a mid-'90s Specialized Crossroads hybrid with a steel frame and cantilever brakes. We have 700x40 on that bike but I don't think it would take any wider without rubbing at the chainstays.

Yup- Itd be super cool if Trek did a run of aluminum frames under the Klein name with higher level components and simple straightforward setup(no internal headset hoses, no proprietary anything) and classic Klein paint schemes.

I have 0 interest in Trek, but would absolutely consider a frame like that.

I love my CC, and will always keep it - it's been drop bar, flat bar, geared, and ss. Has such a great lively ride quality. C'mon, it's a true classic! But I do think, aside from the fact it's rim brakes which I suppose is considered obsolete, lotsa folks aren't looking for that geo these days. I also have another bike, a Rove ST, and it's more in the "modern" gravel bike geo territory. I'm a happy camper, I like 'em both!
EDIT: I predict on 5-10 years Surly will STILL offer the Cross Check frame

...unless Trek buys Surly and kills off what the brand made great.

My old Voodoo Wazoo from the 90’s had no problem with 43’s.

It was definitely ahead of its time in a few respects.

If you use mini V’s, you might have to deflate the tires to get the wheel on.

I’ve run 44’s under 55mm fenders on my Cross Check, you could probably squeeze 48’s or 50’s in there
