Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I rode my bike today without the Awesome Marigold jacket and received no badge. Coincidence? You decide.

After riding, i did some yard work. No badge for that either.

I followed my own advice and slathered lube on my creaky seatpost and it stopped creaking. I gave myself a badge for that.

I had a beard->goatee->moustache progression in college before I finally realized that I do not have good facial hair genes.

This is the only good that came out of it:

We went to Star Wars at the drive-in, which was a lot cooler than it sounds. We took over the first couple rows, dead center, and brought couches, lounge chairs, whatever struck your fancy. And beer. We were about 4 minutes into it,and lo and behold, the movie stopped, and the light melted the film... Pretty cool. I figured it was meant to be, and haven't seen a single Star Wars episode.

For my ride today, I had starred the big climb I wanted to do on Strava, so that my Garmin would do that thing where it lets you know how far ahead or behind your PR you are. 1/4 mile into the climb, it told me I was 'Off Route', to which I said "Oh, no, I'm ****ing NOT!", but it didn't care. It stopped telling me how far ahead or behind I was.

I thought, "Great. Like last week's ride, my GPS location is far enough off that it won't find any of my segments." I checked back on the navigation page repeatedly throughout the ride and it never seemed to be where I was at the time. I figured all I'd get out of it would be just distance, speed, and HR. I planned to write Garmin a Sternly Worded Letter!

I got home, plugged the Garmin into my computer, and got myself some lunch. I check Strava, and it has my whole ride, correctly located. Plus a new PR on that climb, by over a minute (though I did do it faster 20 years ago, pre-Strava).

So, my Garmin apparently doesn't know where it IS, but it knows where it's been. Good thing I know all these roads. If I were using it to navigate, I'd have been SCROOD!

The movie theater in my little town - well, not really in that town, but in the nearest town with a movie theater - had one screen and got new releases weeks, even months after release. The more popular a movie was, the longer it took to get to The Majestic.

So, back in 1977 when the original movie was released, we ended up driving about 35 miles to Camp Hill up near Harrisburg to see it because that was literally the closest theater playing it. This was after it was already a sensation. And it was pretty sensational! Sure, the plot is a little formulaic, but the special effects were done so seamlessly that they didn't detract at all from the movie, the way they did in all other SciFi movies.

You'd have to ask my brother Bob. Though he may not see himself as average.

I could always throw that htfu thing out there, but I get it. Having something on the tube to keep the mind occupied works for me. Looking ahead to the gains you'll see by embracing the thing, also works. You can do this.

2 hours z2... I have to stand every so often when on the trainer, just because. It would have been a solid line, but the vet called to reschedule Georgia-Mae's appointment. I didn't ask why they called on a Sunday. Weird.

2 hours of Zone 2 on a trainer? I think I'd rather staple my tongue to the floor.

Still, I'm gonna have to get used to the idea if I plan to keep my new level of fitness (such as it is) over the winter, and through the Food Holidays.

We saw E.T. at the drive in. Took my pick up and turned it around and put lawn chairs in the back and we had an ice chest with refreshments. Good times.
