Re Use Leather Bar Tape?

Changing out bars from a recent purchase, has nice Brooks perforated bar tape. Can this be reused? I imagine any original adhesive has long dried up

No offense but you are the one looking at it, you tell me.

Are they in good condition? If so use away.

Yes, looks ok. Leather being an animal product has its own characteristics. I think with saddle soap and hanging it to dry after I should be able to dodge any cracking or tearing issues. Some stuff looks great until removed from its current placement. Will find out soon enough

Absolutely reuse it! It might need water soaking for re-application? Other wise the previous curves might make for a tricky reinstall.

The two issues is that it will be stretched around the hoods, and it was cut to size so you won't have much to spare if you wrap it with any more overlap than it has now.

You don't need adhesive to redo the wraps beyond the ends. You also don't need to go crazy with some of the treatments out there designed to restore dry leather, if you leather is not dry. Contact cement at the end plus wax for the wraps would do it.

Get them nice and wet for the installation and they'll reshape themselves beautifully.

I've re-used Brooks a few times. I don't bother with wetting, just wrap, then re-wrap after a few weeks.

I don't think it's reasonable to even think about doing it more than once, though.

I've also done it with Brooks leather tape several times. One issue is that the edges have a tendency to curl up; perhaps the wetting method would help with that.

Absolutely. Leather "anything" is non-disposable. I've taken my Cyclegrip leather tape off and put it back on the Grubb a couple of times. Going on six years, with some of that time on the shelf when I used some other tape. I hit mine with saddle soap and a nylon brush at the end of every season. Then, some Shoe Grease.

Bars very similar, should be ok on length. Contact cement same as rubber cement?

For sure, leather can be cleaned and reused.
Brooks makes excellent leather as would be expected from their loved saddles.
You can use double-sided Tape electrical tape to help the leather stay in place longer.
This is my preference before wrapping.

I should note that the one issue I’ve had—and I’ve had it multiple times—is that once the adhesive on the back is no longer sticky, the tape has a tendency to slide under pressure. For some reason, I only have this happen on the drive side of the handlebars. Guess my right grip is stronger than my left? I just bought some 3M spray adhesive to try on the bare bars first and see if it solves the problem.

I find this thread interesting. I would like to see some of the re-wrap results. Pictures would be helpful if anyone has any to share.

A redone Tempo that was sold years ago. Third or fourth time that Books wrap was used on a bike. Adhesive was long gone but if tightly wrapped, no problemo.
Wetting it down made it easier to stretch tightly.

Thats a really interesting paint job and decaling. Suits the leather perfectly.

Did you paint yourself? Almost an AustroDaimler cream.

Different stuff. Contact cement usually involves putting a thin coat on both sides - back of the wrap and on the bars - letting it dry slightly, then pressing the two surfaces together. No margin for error. I like the idea of double sided tape. Note that I have experience with rubber cement and contact cement but not with leather bar wrap.

How long does leather handle bar last? Can it out live normal tape?

Lordy my, no. That’s a genuine Len M powder coat job from around 2012; sadly his company no longer takes outside projects. A customer wanted her reconditioned bike painted ‘the color of Guiness foam’ and Len nailed it. I had this Tempo frame done the following year in the same color. The decals were cut by a local vinyl shop & came from the period when Velocals lost the rights to reproduce Schwinn decals. I did a handful of Tempo frames with them in various colors.

The Brooks tape is not leather. Its reusable. Same supplier as Fizik. If the backing adhesive peels off, just use a double stick tape.

This is an older wrap, it’s leather. But yes, lots of faux leather out there now
