Right hip is shot (arthritis)

So I got back from an Ortho guy and he will probably sell me a new hip. I asked him why my right hip is so bad but the left doesn't bother me at all. He didn't have an answer, but I got to thinking that I always stop with my right foot down and get on from the left side. I've used clipless since Look first came out with theirs, and clips/straps before that. Wondering if that somehow that was enough to cause the difference?

Seems unlikely. Possibly something a tiny bit asymmetric about your walking gait?

Did you sprain or break your left ankle or experience left knee trauma?

??? little puzzled and curious - but possible I misunderstand

‘stop with right foot down and get on from left side’

to get on from left side - your left foot would be down ... so when stopping - you would also have your left foot down

???

Don't worry... The other hip will probably go as well if ya don't get the bad one fixed...

Ha... No.. Actually its quite common and somewhat of a blessing that one side goes out before the other. I did have a patient where both hips went out at the same time. It was terrible. It put him in a wheel chair till he got first one and then the other fixed.

By the way, he never had an identifiable injury and he was a competitive swimmer... Go Figure...

I'm not sure why you'd expect them both to give out at the same time. That would presume everything was perfect from the day you started using your hips and for all the time period in-between. Very unlikely scenario.

Rheumatoid usually gets both hips at the same time, but osteoarthritis and psoriatic can and does occur in one hip but not the other.

Its not the end of the world. I had total shoulder replacement surgery a few year's back. I could barely move my left arm. Boy was I scared. Today I did some pull ups and last week I was on a ladder using that arm to paint my house.

Why wife had one hip that was in very bad shape and the other hip was OK. She had an artificial hip installed and within a month was riding her bike with no issues. She did have to give up jogging

When I stop I always put the right foot down (curb side for US-ians). When I get off, instead of putting right foot down, I stand on the left pedal and swing right leg over back of saddle while coasting. So I don't unclip the left until my right foot is on the ground (in this case on the left side of the bike).

I do have a "duck-foot" walking gate (had orthodic shoes when I was kid in the 50s) and it's more pronounced on the right side.. I was just thinking if it's "wear out" I have mostly run/cycled/lifted bipedal and never had a significant injury on just one side. My fatherr's knees went out and he waited too ling before finally going to get something done (he was 90) and no doc would touch him. So I think it's best to do a hip replacement now while as strong as I am ever going to be here on out.

Have to see if VA will sponsor or else I guess I have to go Medicare.

Thanks for your replies.

I would not spend much thought on the why's.
Just recently had the left hip replaced. PT kicks my butt on Tuesday and Friday.

Cannot wait to get the right hip replaced and then get back on the bike.
Shoe shopping (SPD) and new bike shopping too.

Luck with surgery,
