Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cyclist fired from job Saluting President

Not to get into a political debate, but I feel if you publicly "salute" the President, your employer has good reason the fire you. Besides, us road cyclist have a bad rep already from riding the roads and such. And, I would never do anything offensive riding next the the Presidential motorcade. Only an idiot wouldn't think there are eyes all around watching every move from someone close by. DUH!

No sympathy here for her.

If you choose to use social media, you choose to take responsibility for it.

I have no social media what so ever.

Flat bar hybrid, wearing yoga pants and a generic sport shirt. I don’t think anyone’s associating her with “us road cyclists.”

I’d be disappointed if my employer felt so strongly either way about any political candidate as to fire me over that.

As I understand it, after the photo went viral, the woman contacted her HR department to inform them that she was the women in the photo. They then asked her to resign based on conduct unbecoming of a company employee (or some such).

We will see how this plays out.

And yes, this probably wants to be on the Political forum

Before getting too outraged, one way or the other, we should keep in mind that the lady's position involved social media for the company. When the photo went viral, she had links from her social media pages and identified herself.

For a random employee it may be more forgivable, but it's her job to know that by identifying herself and her employer on social media, she is representing them and potentially damaging their reputation and business. Not necessarily for "saluting" the President, but she should have been at the minimum silent about it online.

This is a good point and key.

I'm a federal employee, and we have something called "The Hatch Act", on which we get annual training, so we know exactly what is and isn't acceptable.

I don't think it reflects on cyclist all that much, but it gives fuel on both sides of the political debate. I'm sure someone has already printed a t-shirt.

Somewhat Passive/Aggressive. Although I am no fan of our current president, I think this is a show of disrespect and was not the best way to show ones opinion.

I work in DC and often get hung up on foot at rush hour by Presidential motorcades. I've thought about flipping the finger too, not at anyone specific or because of my approval/disapproval rating of any administration, just because I want to get home and I am forced to stand there for 20+ minutes and wait. Use the secret tunnels or go after rush hour man!!!!

Rolling motorcades are't so bad but when the president travels around in DC, they block and clear the entire path from point A to B. Eventually the motorcade drives through and once safe at point B, the path collapses. That can take a while.

I chuckled when I first read this story.
Then the chuckle turned into straight out laughter.

She's exercising her right of free speech. It's the very first of our constitutional amendments. The first and most important one!

She's not representing or speaking on behalf of her employer in any way. With just an average lowyer that's an easy case to win. Not that she would ever want to work for that employer again, but she should certainly collect damages.

This is how fascism begins, folks.

Oh, and in before the lock.

No need to lock it, just move it to the appropriate forum.

The employer wasn't stopping her from speaking, just terminating her employment with the company in an At-Will State, which is their right.

Has nothing to do with fascism.

Boys, boys, boys . . . we know this can't stay. Starting to get heated already now that the 'f' word is out.

There's a heated discussion in P&R already on this topic, so no sense moving this there. This will just close. Sorry!

Incidentally, if anyone wishes to join the P&R discussion, just PM me. Keep in mind it's a little rough and tumble in there although much improved than the past.
