Is this worth the asking price?
I don't know anything about older bikes but am trying to find a good deal for my first road bike. Is this a good deal?

Looks clean, a little more than I'd pay. Nice looking bike though and probably a great starter road bike.

The subject bicycle appears to be a 1988 Miyata 312. If so, main triangle is splined, triple butted CrMo with Mangalight stays and forks. Drivetrain is Exage Acrion with a mix of tertiary components. Overall bicycle is upper entry level, with a nicer than average frame for the level. I'd say it's about 20-25% overpriced and I love Miyata.

This may be a stupid question but if I buy an old bike can I upgrade it with newer components or is there any need to? I am looking at my first road bike and don't want to pay a lot but don't want to buy a piece of junk either.

Really depends on what you think upgrade is. There might be hurdles on this one, some manageable, some not. I don't know if this bike has 700c or 27" wheels, there are now way more 700c tires to choose from for example. If you want index shifting which I think this bike lacks, I would look for a younger machine. Pedals, seat, no problem.

By and large a lot of updates are simply not necessary. Parts for that bike are widely available, will cost a lot less than new parts, and will work as well. This is a very nice bike but, as others have pointed out, somewhat overpriced. You certainly couldn't touch a modern bike anywhere near as nice as this for the asking price of $300.

I can tell you from experience the Exage Action components while entry level are great. I just got into road bikes a few months ago and have now had a few different bikes with different group sets. So far the action is the most user friendly I've had and most reliable. I love the suntour cyclone rear deraileur I have paired with the action stuff as it is incredibly smooth but it seems to require constant tuning/maintenance to keep it shift 100% right.

I agree it is a bit overpriced. In my area, that would be a reasonable price at $200 and a good buy at $150, depending on condition and the market you are located in. For just a bit more than the $300 they are asking, you could probably find a newer bike with integrated shifters.)

The most important thing is to be sure it is the right size for you. An ill fitting bike is never a good deal.
