FS: full set of DiaCompe 987 canti brakes in purple

Up for sale is a set (for both front and rear wheel) of purple anodized Dia Compe 987 cantiliever brakes. Sale includes all hardware, straddle cable, and Kool Stop pads with a decent amount of life left. Not included are straddle cable hangers. Some corrosion on the hardware but the arms themselves are in quite good shape.

The 987 model (If I have that # right) is unique in that the springs go into sleeved bushings, rather than into the canti studs themselves. That should make them quite versatile for the various kinds of canti posts that have appeared over the years.

Price is $45 shipped via USPS Priority Mail in the CONUS. Payment via PayPal or Venmo.

Some corrosion on the hardware...
Got any naval jelly? Drop the bolts in there for ten minutes. Easiest job ever.

That would be cool, but that bike doesn’t have canti posts. Hmm, wonder if @gugie could do a mod without trashing the paint?

You could just zip tie em on. Leave the other ones on there.

I'd like to work on super low temp brazing compounds, but I've got a room temperature superconductivity project to complete first for another customer.

I used a set of these to convert my Schwinn Voyageur to 700c. They worked great.

See a doctor if your navel jelly lasts longer than ten minutes.

Idda done it earlier, but work kept getting in the way.

After I’m finished with those two projects, I’ll start on a smaller avocado pit. That one should be my Nobel prize moment.

IIRC, the 987’s are designed the same as 986’s, but with a lower profile. I used the 986’s on my Rock Combo build.

The part that acts as the friction stop against the frame has lands that are either 15 or 13mm (can’t recall - one of my cone wrenches fit it perfectly) so that the tension can be balanced between the two sides of the canti. Both sides can be adjusted so one can increase or decrease the spring load while keeping the tension balanced.

With the mounting bolt just loose enough, one increases or decreases spring tension then tightens the bolt. Repeat on the other side. It’s a great idea in principle: essentially infinite adjustability without the need for a spring hole in the frame. But it takes patience to achieve total harmony. Once you get the hang of it though, the process is pretty quick. They’re great brakes. Even better in purple!

If I wasn't planning to run crap on my FrankenKline, I might snag these from Neal. But alas, they are too nice, and who needs nice brakes--- when you live in flat-lands. I just drag my feet, aka, Flintstone style.

I’ve long daydreamed about finding a shop in NYC that will do small-batch anodizing, and then having them ano various rare vintage parts. It’s still a daydream…

YOU could become that dream shop, check out the DIY kits from Caswell Plating.
They have been selling stuff for decades, but I never used any myself so cannot vouch for them.

I've thought about home anodizing before but after reading all about Caswell's kits, it just seemed like too much work. I did buy Caswell's chrome kit and used it in 2015-2016 to re-chrome small parts like derailleur cages and crank bolts. Worked well but was finicky to set up and time consuming to do. At this point in my life I'm happy leaving stuff like chroming, anodizing, and frame painting to the professionals.
