Mountain Bike Archive Blog
Before there were mountain bike magazines, there were articles about mountain biking in other publications. I have the most comprehensive collection of early mountain bike articles. Even though little of it dates from later than 1990, it fills a room at the Marin Museum of Bicycling/Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.
I spend my time at the museum scanning articles. I invite all C&V mountain bikers to remotely rummage through my files with me. I add new (old) material all the time.

What an awesome resource. Perfect reading for sitting around getting fat in winter.
For any of you who don't know, Charlie is the real deal. Nobody else can claim such an all-encompassing immersion in the earliest world of mountain bikes — or "MountainBikes", the name of the company where he worked with Gary Fisher to sell some of the world's first real MTBs. Way back then, he was publisher of Fat Tire Flyer, the incomparable early MTB magazine.
More recently, he "wrote the book" on the birth of MTBs, literally, it's called Fat Tire Flyer: Repack and the Birth of Mountain Biking. Fantastic book. You aren't a real mountain biker unless you own this book, so go buy it now. It's a ton of fun.

Thanks for sharing this additional background. As an owner of 2 Fisher "MountainBikes" I've been wanting to learn more about the earlier history and have already ordered the book.
