I think you're right on about the components, the rear brake pads just catch the rim when put all the way down on the caliper arm as far as possible. I can't tell if the brake bridge was crushed or made that way by looking at it but you would probably know.

Totally new to this forum and really hoping someone can help me. I bought a Bianchi Apr 11th, I LOVE IT. I've put 1000km on her already and now want to more about this lady. I've done what I can to figure things out but it's no going well.
Serial# under the BB = BS347162
According to the rear der ZD = April 1983
Front der VE = May 1979

Can anyone tell me the model of my Bianchi? And the year/month if possible?

thank you Bianchigirll! ...Yea, I was kinda keeping my paint job to myself, Being that I know how some people here dont like the idea of doing that to an original bike..I also was new to the vintage bicycle world and the bike was free and i wanted a yellow bike.
So you think an 88 Sport SX, ok thank you so much for your help.

Sorry but you need new brakes on that bike. The reach on those Ultegras is just too short. Some one makes a funky adaptor that might give you enough room but they cost just as much as a nice set of Tektros. yes that bridge is crushed by the installer of the brakes. I would seriously look around for that washer. This is why I can't stand it when guys simply put the drill to a bike frame to fir recessed brakes.

The decal style does not match the frame, and the brakes calipers and levers post date the frame by about 10 years. Also very few US market Bianchis came with all chrome forks unless they were extremely highend and then still rarely, so it is either a replacement or possibly from Canada. Does the frame actually say Bianchi on it anywhere?

I can't really nail it down. I thought it might be a special but the RD cable routing is wrong as well as the color is off. The color really doesn't match anything I see in the catalogs. Bike companies do make running changes but I just can't put my finger on anything right at the moment.

Give the frame a good once over and see if you see Bianchi stamped anywhere. Also while your adjusting the seat height check the diameter of the seat post, and if you can read it the bottom bracket size on the bottom bracket cups.

I knew the brakes had been updated, and was really confused on why the derailer dates would be so far apart. I can't believe the serial under the BB means so little LOL???

I'll take this to the next level, rip her right down and check the dropouts, BB, seat tube, steer tube... Check for signs of it being repainted/stickered...
It's going to take a week or so, there's no rain in the forecast, and until it rains, her and I have a date each and every day!

Thanks or the info, I'm pretty sure I have a spare oval washer somewhere. Any idea where I can find one of those adapters? I would like to keep the whole component set together if it's not too expensive.

Not an oval washer a concave washer. It is like this one but bigger and allows that allen recess bolt to go through it.




Here are the adaptors but like I said you might be better off just using Tektros.

I don't know how hard they will be find but these brakes did come a long reach, 57mm, also.

I hate to be "that guy" but I would have a careful look at the fork and top tube on this bike. It could just be the camera angle but it looks a little like the front fork is bent back and maybe even a small buckle on the underside of the top tube. Again, could just be the camera angle but something looks not right.

Hello Bikes76 Welcome to the forums. That is a Canadian model? I am pretty sure it is an '88 but @armstrong101 is a fellow Canuck and might be able to confirm that. I love that color.

L.8 on the BB, from what I understand, means the frame was built in 1988 (for the 8), and either December (L, 12th letter for 12th month), or the 2nd half of June (where each letter corresponds to the first 2 weeks or the last 2 weeks of every month).

I have 3 CDIs in original build. My cranks are Stronglight (France). I can't identify the make of your cranks, but they don't appear to be Stronglight and they are different to what appears on my bikes. The brakes and shifters are the same as what I have. If your bike colour (I believe they called it Burgundy or Burgundy red) doesn't exist in the US (which I believe BG alluded to in the past), then it's a Canadian market bike. I have the same one in 50 cm.

wow thank you guys, you are good. It is a canadian model yes. Now I know it's an 88 model. Cranks is Aero Coronado PR.
I love the color too. Never seen another one like it yet. 88 maybe but still runs perfectly well !

Bianchigirll or T-Mar: Bianchi Premio Torquise men's bicycle

I am wondering if you could help me out with what your thoughts are on this bike. From everything I've read on this forum from the two of you, the serial numbers dont mean much. The serial number of "70687441" means this is a 87? and the guy claims it to be around this time but I believe he is saying that because of the world championship 86-87 stickers. My issue is that the Velobase scan of the '87 Bianchi catalog says that the tubing for a Premio should be Tange, but there are decals on seat tube that are clearly "Columbus". It also has a "Campagnolo" decal underneath it. However all the parts are Shimano and there are no Campy parts on it.

Is this fishy or is it just me?

You are correct it is Tange tubing the Columbus decal doesn't belong on that bike. I am not even sure that is a real Columbus decal, if it is, it is a very old one.

Correct also it is an '87 you can tell by the script model name. Almost all Bianchis from '87 had that world champ decal, and in a different form from '88 to 90/91ish.

The shifters, derailleurs and wheels all look replaced or upgraded, no way to know if the parts were new when added. I think these sold around 380ish so even with the upgrades and extras 315 may still be a bit high. SF is a hot market but so 315 may be OK but I would try for closer to 275ish.

Hello everyone!

I just joined this forum, it's so informative! I'm wondering if anyone can help clarify what I've got here. After reading almost the entire thread, I might have more questions than answers!

I was told that I was purchasing a 53cm Metallic Violet '86 Limited

Here's what I'm looking at:

BB is stamped with I.9(or 6.I) and 812
Formula Two Columbus sticker on top of seat tube
Made in Italy sticker at bottom of seat tube
Columbus sticker on the fork
Full Shimano 600 (with SIS) throughout
Ambrosio 19 Super Elite rims

Now I know I.9 means it was made in '89, so does that mean it was released in '90?
The only other mention of Metallic Violet was by Bianchigirll about a Japanese '83 Volpe.

I'd really like to know where it was made(I guess people can buy stickers online), where in the product line it is as far as quality(mid-level?), etc.

While I probably paid too much for it ($450), smaller frames here in MN are hard to come across (lots of Scandinavians), it has very little wear and is in incredible shape. And more importantly, it is a DREAM to commute on. Steel is Real!

But that certainly looks like a '86 Limited to me. That decal style was dropped after '87 and the '88 and '89 models were built in Japan rather than Italy (yes this one does hail from Italy) and had 600 Ultegra "tricolor" groups. In '90 the Limited name was replaced by Virata. This falls into the Performance group so it was built to race.

Any Idea where I said that about the '83 Volpe as that sounds wrong on both the color, metallic violet wasn't used back then and the Volpe debuted in '86 in Sizzling Peach.


Nice looking Bianchi it should be a great rider. If it is mechanically sound and what you wanted the price is OK

I was only pointing out the fact that I hadn't seen any other posts about Metallic Violet frames.

From reading the forum, I thought that the number following the letter, as in I.9, means that it was built in the ninth year of the 80's, and released the following season. I must be wrong on the identification scheme. Any insight to the ID scheme used?

I guess I have another question or two. Should I be looking for New Old Stock drive train parts if I wish to use and keep this bike for the long term? Or is it better to just better to bite the bullet and buy new? Is this even feasible with this frame? Clearly I'm new to bike mechanics.
