Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

easing back into it...

Hi Guys,
I've decided to ride fast again. For the last few years I've been smelling the roses and exploring on my bikes, as such my stable has become decidedly heavy and steal with nice wide tires. its pretty great

However, I've been riding with my uncle lately and thats been kicking my ass. I can't hang on my Salsa Vaya, running 38mm tires. This lead me to go dig up my alu/carbon Trek for about 6 years ago, but something has happened. Apparently its too small, which makes sense as it was a bike a bought when I didn't know much. I thought, at the time, it was normal for my back to hurt after spending an hour or so working hard on the bike. I know now what I didn't know then.

So here I am at the precipice of speed, with a desire for a shiny new machine. Lots has changed since I turned my shoulder on the world of fast bikes and I don't know where to start. I see ALU is making a come back with bikes like the Allez Sprint, but something tells me to suck it up and go carbon. I'd like to spend under 3k for a whole bike or under 1500 on a frame. I think I want a race geometry opposed to an endurance geometry. My Vaya can handle that stuff.

I plan to join the local club once I get my conditioning back but I don't really see racing my future.

Any help is appreciated, theres so much out there!

Giant: Several models of TCR are available in your budget. And if you want one that looks fast, too, you can get last year's model of their aero race bike, the Propel within your budget as well.

Just throwing this out there - you can get a much better alu-framed bike for 3k than you can a carbon bike for 3k.
You can have a allez sprint plus wheels of your choice with full ultegra, sub-17 pounds for under 3k easy.
Definitely fits your bill for race geometry too.
I got rid of my Roubaix for mine, and absolutely love it.

Pic (not mine) for reference

Worth considering. However, remember granny's advice: Don't you buy no ugly bike!

My Uncle rides a supersix. Looks like a great bike and he has lots of awesome things to say about it. However in the name of variety I'd like to try something else
