Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Poor riders should never ride wheel to wheel laterally because this takes the margin for drafting out. Poor riders have to draft closer of course which is a bigger threat. The weakest rider in our 4 day a week ride just crashed and broke his collar bone because of this. Honestly, he is too weak for our ride and it cost him.

Being a good rider in a paceline is as much art as science. People that are riding over their head in term of their fitness relative to group strength are a greater liability to themselves and others.
So I'm clear...

I feather brakes to keep a consistant gap between me and the rider in front of me. Therefore, I am an accident waiting to happen, a poor paceline rider, out of shape, and unskilled.

I'm ok with your assessment because apparently I ride with cyclists who are so much more advanced, that they don't seem to mind.

I'm suprised that in the hundreds of miles of paceline riding I did this year, and the considerable amount of time we spent in the 25mph range that I didn't die or kill anyone.

No, they mind, and probably even talk about your lack of riding skills privately..just don't tell you to your face. 1/4 of the weaker riders in my group aren't skilled riders...they sound like you...ride their brakes because they don't have a smooth pedal stroke or understand innately how hard to pedal and they constantly need to brake to modulate speed.
Don't be surprised you didn't hurt anybody. Skilled riders compensate for weaker riders in every paceline. The difference in riding ability in my group ride is quite profound. Some riders are very consistent and reliable and some are downright darty and jerky. You maybe be fine...but good riders don't ride their brakes.

I want that silly, disruptive argument about braking to end, now. And I do not want to see it return in this thread again. Start a new thread about that crap.

Wow time flies. Some of main protagonists are still around.

Event Services still posts in the 33 occasionally ( even when he's not sellling a book)

I didn't realize JSharr, or Voodoo76 dated back that far.

55/Rad's bike is finally painted.

Botto was sighted recently in the 33, and I don't believe Pcad is dead yet, even though he's both too old and too fat for this sport.
