How the hell did I wind up with five Raleighs?

I bought a brown Sports 3-speed for myself for town riding. Then I found a green ladies' 23" Sports at the curb on trash day in a small town in NC, then I was given blue ladies' Sports by a woman for whom I'd found it at a yard sale. Long story. She never rode it (probably not even once, so nev-er). Then I got the Pro frameset from a buddy who'd bought the bike in order to sell off the Campy stuff (hate that). Then a Tourist that showed up at the local co-op. That's all...for now. I also had a silver/blue Pro and a Portage, both of which are long gone and missed.

I just scored this '85 Prestige. I had to drive a couple of hours to get it, and she's got some some battle scars, but the Full Dura Ace STI set up makes up a bit for it!

The bike was listed as overhauled and so on. When I got it I had to go through everything to make it rideable. After I realigned the fork the ride and handling qualities came out. I really like it now.

First picture is from the eBay listing. The next shows the changes that I made. I'm going to replace the "melt forged" cast SR cranks with a Stronglight 93 crankset.

It's a '92, but the forks and stays are chrome molybdenum...the handlebars are from '88...and I'm looking for an excuse to post it!

Here's an image of my '72 Raleigh Professional that I've owned since about 1977. It was set up in piecemeal fashion from hand-me-down parts for far too many years. I recently had a chance to get some Campy parts for a reasonable fee so she got restored parts-wise. Original FD, RD, DT shift-levers, paint, chrome, and decals. Mid to late '70's hubs and rims. Newer (early '80s) crank and brake calipers and levers. New Brooks seat and wrap and she's looking grand.

My '73 Super Course has appeared here before, but since you asked about Pasela PTs, here it is again. I just completed the Eroica CA ride last Sunday, and they worked great on pavement and miles of dirt and gravel. My point of reference are Gatorskins, which are on all my other bikes. I also rode 700c x 28 Gators last time on Eroica. I think the Paselas handled the dirt slightly better, and gave up nothing on the pavement. I've had these on the Raleigh for just about a year, and had one flat in over 1500 miles, and that was on pavement. I've done two gravel rides including Eroica. Great tire, classic look, good price. What's not to like?

Great looking bike. I love the color scheme. I should have gone lighter in color on saddle and bars when I built mine (dark green SC above).

Finally finished with my 1987 Technium 440 I used to ride in my college years. Breathed some new life into it with 2x10 speed for commuting and some gravel trails. New 700C wheels and brakes. Otherwise this bike only stayed on the trainer.
Stripped bare.

I'm running the same size in the PT version and to me it appears that they have the same tread pattern at least in this size. To be honest, I like the tire and it rolls rather well in my book. Once I get this bike up to cruising speed it seems to roll rather fast. I've only put about 400-500 miles on it since it been completed. It's my Sunday cruiser and I ride it to honor a long time friend who got me into bicycling. This was the bike I rode when I started and he was hit and killed by a motorist 2 yrs ago this Oct. He also had this same bike along with others in his stable of bikes...

OK then, if we're gonna post some Pros then I'll play again. This is my '76 Mk IV, maybe one of the last made before the retool to the Mk V. Not a garage queen but I'd guess very period correct. OO changed out the tubulars to clinchers and the Campy crankset to Sugino - not unusual for the period. I have no idea why there were never any decals but I put a couple on just for the fun of it. I also really like the Bocama HT lugs. Never seen another Pro with them.

I love riding this regularly. 32 miles out the Chester Valley Trail and VF Park on Friday and planning to go down the SRT to see the new extension below South Street tomorrow. This bike is great on all kinds of roads and surfaces.

Thanks, I'll probably stick with the ones I have, then. The 1-1/4" size seems to look too big for my aesthetic taste. There's probably not a better rolling tire, in gumwall, for the price, I guess.

Before the end of summer, will have to take a group picture. If the Robin Hood and the Dunelt can be counted, there will be a baker's dozen. Too many of them (about half) are in the "project" stage currently.

Those are not just Sprite 5-speeds, they have Sturmey-Archer 5-speed internally geared rear hubs. Get both bikes and be a hero in the "For the love of English 3-speeds" thread.

If you don't know, the hubs function more like dual-range 3-speeds than what you'd expect a 5-speed to be like.

If you get those bikes you need to get a Sturmey tattoo.

Annnnnddd...they are both 23" frames. Gold mine for us tall folks.

Contribute to the discussion? Ask something you genuinely don’t know or understand. Complement someone’s sweet ride and specifically what you like about it. Share your example of what someone else has done/asked. Start your own thread to introduce yourself and describe what you plan to do cyclingwise in the months ahead. There are easily nine ways to get around the limit...
