Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sell bike with crappy wheel set or new wheel set?

Currently my bike (2005 Trek 1500) has mismatched wheels, and the rear rim is cracking by two spokes. Oh well.

I was planning on buying a new wheel set for a while, but I'm at the point where I'd really like, could use, and can afford a nicer, new or used bike.

Should I:
throw it on ebay the way it is
or buy a new wheelset
or spend the time replacing the rim on the cracked rear (I've never built a wheel but always looking to learn, but I really don't have the time this month)?

If I do buy a new wheelset, whats a good set to throw on, that I won't be throwing money away on?

part it out and sell it on ebay, but that's if you have something else to ride in the meantime.

If the only thing wrong with it is the wheels when buy new ones, or fix the broken wheel.

Mavic Open Pros with Ultegra Hubs are decent wheels.

I am running a set on my Trek 1200. Moved the stock Alex wheels to an older steel frame.

Do you honestly think he will recoup $260 on the sale by adding this set?

Come on folks, help the brother out.

Quick check on Ebay, used 1500's going for between $300 and $700 and you want him to throw $260 into it to sell it???

But he's already at the point where he would "like, afford, want" a new bike and is just asking what to do with the wheels on his old one to sell.

Having rented a Trek 1500 a couple of times on vacation, then going back to my CAAD8, I couldn't agree with him more that it is time to get a new bike.

I would go for the new bike but try to sell the old one on CL. ebay fees would eat up a lot of what you are going to get for the old one.

+1...

Another option is putting some cheap Alex wheels from eBay/Craigslist and put those on your bike.

I agree that there's nothing wrong with a Trek 1500, but if you want to sell it, throw some Forte Titans or those Nashbar road wheels on it. $150 to make the bike appealing and "matching" isn't too bad. Better yet, see what's on craigslist. Around here, people are selling new wheelsets for $100-175. Definitely low end, but you're just trying to sell the bike.

I am absolutely shocked that you have ridden one for any length of time.

My two weeks and some 300-400 miles on them taught me the difference between a well made alu frame (like my CAAD8) and a slopped together alu frame (like the Trek 1500). It was a world of difference.

If you get a new bike, then I agree with parting it out. You are unlikely to recover buying new parts just to sell it...

...if it is the stock wheel, take it to a trek dealer and have them warranty it, that is common on a lot of the older double spoke wheels...and if i guessed it mght be a select or something of the sort?
if its not then never mind.

I would buy new wheels for the 1500. That is a decent bike (good frame, good components.) I will definitely agree with you that wheels are crap. I've ridden my 06 (got it in late 07) 1500 3k miles and the back wheel is about to detonate on me. Keep the bike, buy some bomb proof wheels (hint: Mavic Open Pros with Ultegra hubs) and ride the crap out of it.

If your dead set on upgrading to a new bike I would wait to to do anything with your old one until you have found it's replacement. On many bikes the stock wheels are one of the weaker points in terms of spec and one of the better upgrades you can make is a new set. In this case what I would do is replace the new bikes wheels with a nice upgraded set and move the stock wheels from the new bike over to the 1500 to sell. That way you get a nice upgraded wheelset on your new ride and the 1500 has a decent usable set on when you sell.

I will be selling my bike in the near future (the new one should be here this weekend) and picked up a used set of Shimano WH 500 on fleabay for $130. I really couldn't in good conscience put someone else on the old broken down wheels...

If you can pick up a cheap rim, replace just the old rim. It's not hard. I run masking tape through the spokes, two or three strands to hold the spokes in position. Then I back off the nipples until the old rim is free. Put the new rim right in place screw the nipples on loose, remove the tape and true the wheel. This saves all the time of running the spokes through the hub, making mistakes, forgetting to put the spokes in the same way the hub was set up originally (been there, done that).
