Anyone know maximum tire width the original treks could handle. They came with 27s so I'm wondering if how wide a 700 tire fits.

Hey, that's a nice TX700! Mine is currently fitted with 27 inch x 32mm, but with fenders. I imagine you could squeeze in 35mm tires, but that would increase chances of tire rub.

Clearance at the chainstays is likely to be the limiting factor. I measure about 36mm there on my similar era, similar geometry model 510 frame. You'll want at least a couple mm clearance on each side of the tire. A 32-622 tire ought to work fine. Tektro makes some decent long-reach, dual pivot brake calipers.

Nice looking TX. I've done this with a TX 700 and can confirm that 700x32's fit fine. There's enough room for 35's, but tire rub is likely.

I'm running 700 x 35c tires on my 1979 Trek 510 and there is plenty of room to spare. But 32c are more likely to fit without a problem.

When I started in 1980, Trek was using round chain stays and ovalized them on a special form with an Arbor press, and an additional crease was pressed into the outer aspect of the drive side chainstay for chainring clearance. Some of the larger 9nn series frames using Columbus SP tubing had chainstays deeply indented by Columbus. These indents were oriented as the inner aspect of both chainstays, for tire clearance. We pressed additional crease on the outer aspect of the drive side chainstay for chainring clearance.

This may have been said, but if you take 1.25 inches and multiply that by 25.4 millimeters, you get 32 millimeters. So 32 mm nonimal tire width is the same as 1 ¼ inch nominal width. Question is, what about the actual widths of tires?

Not sure if this helps, but my 77 TX900 is running 27 x 1.25” tires with plenty of clearance.

Hi, nice bike!
I'm runnng Gravel Kings 32 on my 1980 Trek 510 Ishiwata. It's tight at the rear brake bridge, had to do Tektro 539 rear brake, there's barely enough clearance at the top of the tire.
What brakes are you using?
Thanks,
RT
