Totally agree. When I saw Mo & Hannah sporting PitVipers for the first time, I thought it was a joke. Haven't we been through this already? Then again, Mo & Hannah and all the other young whippersnappers wearing them weren't even born yet when Greg Lemond wore those original Oakleys back in the day. They WERE so cool back then. But not any more!

I don't get it either.

PS Once again, I posted a reply before reading any others! Ha, ha, ha! LOVE IT! Thanks to everyone for the great old pics!

I've had Tiffosi, Oakley, etc. IMO they are no better than my Maui Jim sport sunglasses. Which is what I now wear.

And bugs. You don't even have to ride long or fast in order to understand - you just need to have gotten a bug stuck in your eye, one time. Then you'll really understand the need for better eye protection. As you said, they're not so much sunglasses as they are goggles. When it's not sunny, I ride with clear ones.

It's hard to tell by looking at them. 2 things I consider: do they keep the wind out of my eyes? When you're descending at speed the wind can get around some glasses and go into your eyes, bringing dirt and bugs with it. I use reading sunglasses for riding and some shapes work and some do not.

The second thing is can I see when in the drops. If the top of the frame obstructs my vision I have to raise my head higher to see under the frame. This is a big deal.

The reason for wearing glasses is eye protection, and, in my case, magnification. All the talk about style is meaningless. Doesn't matter if DeNiro looks cool wearing them.

Maybe. What's your riding position? Post pics.

I often wear Ray-Bans when I ride, 'specially solo and/or if I'm treating the ride casually. My Oakley's are definitely better suited to the task, but these are the sacrifices I make in the name of fashion.

This guy is SAFA (Brian) who does descents at ridiculous speeds all over the US and Europe, often with pro riders. At over 50MPH good eye coverage is mandatory. This pic was taken on a more leisurely tour following this year’s TdF. Has his own YouTube channel.

I haven't tried Maui Jim, but I found that I like Oakley's lens clarity and tint options better than Tifosi. I also found that Oakleys don't fog up as easy as Tifosi (of course this is specific to the models I've used, and the shape of my face. YMMV).

On a scale of Mr. Peanut's monacle to Daft Punk, where is your preference for eye protection?

Ironically? When I've seen kids wearing them, the highest concentration of which were at an air show, I was dying to ask, in a beat-around-the-bush way, if they were wearing them because they thought they were genuinely cool. 80's colorways, 90's branding/logos, and a modern, but niche, form factor - wierd.
