Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

sram rival vs shimano 105

I'm currently riding shimano sora and am looking to upgrade. Being that 105 and rival are pretty much the same price, which one is better? Thanks.

You could take a look at Campy Veloce too. You can get it fairly cheap(~500 for a complete group if you look around), and IMHO it shifts MUCH better than the 105/ultegra mix I have on my bike now.

What are the prices you are seeing for Rival and 105? Are you replacing the entire group? Also replacing for current 105 is not worth doing when 5700 is coming out very soon.

Rival is around $700 on ebay for complete group. New Campy Athena 11 alloy group is also $700 w/ coupon at PBK. Which one would be the better pick now?

I think Campy stuff is super cheap right now because of the world of hurt the Euro is having vs the dollar.

Rival. It is a LOT lighter than 105. And you can't accidently shift while braking. And the quality is better.

I would like to know anyone that has accidently shifted while breaking using Shimano.

I'd go 105, but I just don't like the feeling of the rival group I tried.

I would like to know if anybody, in the heat of a sprint riding Sram, has accidentally shifted early?
It would be worse, I say.

And As far as shifting while braking with shimano-I can slow down for traffic lights and whilst braking, pick my gear to take off again. shift while brake can be advantageous.

Love my rival. Shifts are just dead on, instantly slams into the next gear. Shifts great front or rear even under load. Never missed a shift while sprinting. Also i just dont like how the shimano shifters work, feels clunky. Have to move the whole lever.

The exchange rate has brought the 105 groupset down to about $529 on PBK now (or $583 if you don't use the USA10 coupon code). I don't think I've seen Rival seen anywhere for under $700 yet.

There's a pretty good deal on chainreactioncycles for the 6600 Ultegra groupset as well ($551).

Try and somewhere to test ride both and make the decision yourself. You won't find consensus here.

Rival might cost a tad more than 105 but if you were to compare groups, it's equal to Ultegra, not 105.

SRAM Rival is better than 105. It costs about the same, but is much lighter.

However it's not going to slow you do if you get 105 instead. Just get whichever your prefer, or whichever you can find the best deal on. I prefer SRAM because of the style of shifting and the fact that it's lighter. However if I really liked Shimano, I wouldn't mind the extra grams because I know that's not going to really change my performance much.

Also you can shift brake with SRAM if you need to.

I have both.
don't worry about the weight unless you're so strong and fit that a few grams is the only thing keeping you from amazing speeds.

I find the 105 to be kind of a "smoother" shift than rival.
105 has bigger hoods, which means more hand positioning room, but the brake/shifter is (IMO) a tad too big.
105 has exposed cables. meh.
the brake/shifter combo has resulted in me accidentally braking when i meant to shift.

Rival has hidden cables and smaller carbon fiber brakes levers.
I find Rival to feel a bit more "mechanical" or "clicky" than the 105, but both are precise.
I prefer Rival's "doubletap" shifting to 105's brake/shifter.

i recommend rival.
