Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

"connection request" - problems connecting 6870 Di2 to PC

Hi all!

I'd like to play with the config of my Di2 but despite Windows showing the device as present the e-tube app doesn't progress beyond the "connection request" popup shown below.

Things I'd tried:
- Windows 7 and 8
- Various versions of the software including 2.3 and 2.9
- Connecting just the battery to the box (it's an internal battery by the way, with three ports on the box)
- Turning it on and off again
- Swearing

But all to no avail. Any ideas? All help greatly received.

as the error message states, there could be a problem with the SM-PC1/SM-BCR2 unit. as a test and if i had access to another unit, possibly from a friend, i would swap them. if not i would take the unit to the nearest shimano dealer and have them test it. should be conclusive and not too difficult. i would check for latest firmware (driver) updates too, if that possibility has not already been explored.

i'm assuming you are familiar with this page from Shimano concerning the SM-PCE1/SM-BCR2?

that type of message is often one that hints to a firmware update/software incompatibility problem. the OS detects (successfully) a device has been plugged into the USB port, passes off control to the proper device driver and then everything goes belly-up. it's often the best message that can be sent under the circumstances.

my sympathies , installation/compatibility problems can often be a SOB.

Thanks everyone It's a new bike so I'll take it to the shop and see what they can do with it. Doesn't look like there's much I can do at home.

(I'll repost in that other forum first though to see what they have to say)

The E-tube software installed easily for me (on Win 7). Your LBS should be able to find what's wrong.

I set it to shift 3 cogs when holding the button (for the normal half second). So shifting to the small chainring at the base of a hill is just two long presses of each bottom button: small chainring and 3 smaller cogs. Then, over the top of the hill, two long presses of each top button.

And it's nice in the winter with heavy gloves, when I can't always feel each click.
