I live approximately 5 miles from work. I usually take an added two mile ride to give me 7 miles or 14 roundtrip.

Hmm, I was not aware that any human can walk 5 miles in 30 minutes. I'm a fairly fast walker, but I would barely walk 2 miles in that time.

i live one mile from work/school, and in this fall i will be about 3.5. i'm moving to a less expensive apt (~$175 less/mo) with more space in a sweet neighborhood with a T stop across the street.

You wont be walking at 10miles an hour that'd be a run or a jog at the least.

What I think it may be more like is 5km... that'd be possible if you had a fast walk.

I live 11.2 miles from work (done via odometer on bike, and via google pedometer thing ). If it was flatter I'd consider riding to 20miles (40miles round trip) but as it is its about at my limit for commuting.

I live 3.some miles from work. Back in February, I found out that the funding on the project I was working on was being cut :-(. So I found myself having to do a job hunt. Well I had a few goals in a job during the job hunt. 1) (most important) It the Pittsburgh region (if you ever lived here you would understand, if not you might not understand) 2) and in biking distance from home (I was flexible on this one). I also put my resume in at a company I had tried 2 times before at in the past (Union Switch and Signal)

Well at the begin March I got 2 offers, one at Union Switch and Signal (the one I really wanted) and another company. US&S was biking distance (15 minutes), and the other one would demand that I got a car since it would have been a 30 minute drive. The other company wanted to try to make a counter offer, so I had to site down and figure out the amount more they would have to offer to make the offer equal to US&S (since at US&S I would not have to get a car and the other company I would have to, and besides I wanted US&S so they would have to beat being equal) So I figured that since I would have to buy a car, they would have to pay $15K more a year just to be equal (that $15 would be the pre-tax cost for a car with my numbers) and even if they were equal I wanted US&S so to get me they would have had to do something like $25K more a year, that would not happen ever.

I am very happy with how that last job hunt turned out, and I am really happy where I am now.

I work at home, 100%. I teach piano out of home and in my spare time I work as a language specialist (my "real" job), editing medical journals and books, and I send all my material to the publishers via the internet. This makes being car-free a cinch.

6.5 miles from work, either on a curvy hypotenuse using bike trail or taking the other 2 sides of the triangle to drop the kids at their daycare (on the right angle) but then going straight down a main road.

My wife has a 30 mile commute each way, though. Current gig not bus-friendly, but the last was.

My fiance and I are both 5-6 miles depending on the route. I'd say most people who live in town don't have more than 10 miles of a commute. Sadly most of them went with the cheap real estate and live either near the county line or in a nearby county (we have small counties in KY)

12 miles. But again, it's california. If I lived any closer, I'd have to cut off my left arm to pay for the rent.

i live in a town of 28,000, the entire town is probably less than 5 square miles...80% of whom work on the base like i do...only about a dozen of us commute on bicycles...but we get out tv stations from LA

i ride 5 miles each way. takes me 20 minutes with lights and wind and whatnot. before i sold my car, it was a 30-35 minute drive depending on traffic.
the bus would take me 2 changes and up to an hour... i haven't tried that route yet. unless i get really sick, i shouldn't have to.

I ride 22 miles each way. It's usually 75 minutes, best time so far is 71. I've managed twice a week most weeks since this April, just last week proved I could do 3x/week, the 3rd being back-to-back with the 2nd. My next goal is 5 days a week... I think I'm hooked! :-D

Last time I posted in this thread my commute was 31 miles, which of course I drove. Now my commute is around 3 miles, and tomorrow I will be riding to work for the first time in my life.
