...my sympathies on your father's condition. I imagine you have a lot on your plate right now. The value of the bike is minimal, even in working condition. It' a good example of the utility bikes that were popular throughout Asia and SE Asia, 40 or 50 years ago, before everyone got enough money to buy cars and motor scooters. Were I inn your circumstances, I would just give it away to a bike co-op or other charity. Those rod brakes are kind of dangerous, even when working well. But yes, they were very popular transportation devices back a few decades ago. I guess people adapted to the longer stopping distances. The hub (?) brake on the rear probably works better, but it's on the rear, so less effective there.

Hello Bluegreenjill,
welcome to the forum and thank-you for posting information about your bicycle.

Deki is a company that was founded in 1916 in Sakai City, Japan. At one time they manufactured some of their own frames. Later the company assembled bicycles using frames from other manufacturers. In 1992, Deki was the second largest bicycle assembler in Japan.

Deki's primary focus was utility (or practical) bicycles for the Japanese market. This bicycle is exactly that, a utility bicycle for Japan. Some of decals on the bicycle are specific to Japan. I suspect that this bicycle was originally sold in Japan.

The bicycle is an interesting oddity in North America. Possibly some one who collects bicycles may be interested.
