Winter gear - People laugh at me!!!

I am a car free full time bicycle commuter but sometimes I walk.

Today it was about 20 degrees and snowing/sleeting so I decided to leave the bike at work and walk home.

I am the type of guy who LOVES winter but refuses to be cold just because it’s cold outside. I was wearing camouflage coveralls, my orange jacket that I wear biking, face mask (baca whatever) and my orange stocking cap on top of that. I have camo stuff because I hunt and the clothing is really warm.

I have to walk across a large university campus to get home. Tonight as I was walking this smug looking college student wearing jeans and a hoodie snickered uncontrollably at my clothing. I became embarrassed and took my hat and mask off and was cold the rest of the way home.

Should I be embarrassed? I sure look different than 99% of people out in the weather but I am warm as can be. This is not the first time this has happened to me....in fact people often make some type of comment about my clothing. People ask me if I am hunting college students, if I killed anything that day etc. It pisses me off and embarrasses me every time. Why cant people just be cold if they want to and leave me the hell alone.

Where in human evolution did being cold and looking cool become more important than staying warm?

You need to perfect the menacing scowl.

But you'll never leave home without your menacing scowl.

They cannot see my face due to the mask.

Maybe if I painted a scowl on the outside of my mask?

I wouldn't worry about what other people think.

It's good that you're riding your bike. Hunting clothes are durable and warm. Why waste money buying a separate set of riding clothes if the hunting clothes keep you warm?

I'm sure I look pretty goofy in my winter riding setup, but I don't care as long as it keeps me warm.

Bring the rest of your hunting gear. It's hard to snicker uncontrollably at a guy with a gun.

Just kidding. I wear camo cargo pants most of the time, but I figure riding in the snow makes me look like a tool anyways, so after that, what's there to worry about, really.

You are becoming a disappointment to me. You never cared when I laugh at you but you care about a dime-a-dozen college brat?? Next you'll be worrying cause cagers honk at you. Be proud, man.

Tell them you're with Homeland Security and ask them where the security office is.

UnderArmor ColdGear makes winters possible. Just wear a layer of that under my normal clothes or clothes I would wear for skiing. So a bunch of overweight people sitting in their cars who spend 3-5k Dollars a year on gas are laughing at you? I honestly wouldn't care what people who aren't doing what you do think about how you do it.

I live in an area where everyone hunts. The kids who don't wear camo and orange are the ones who get snickered at.
If you wear tights and lycra you get splashed by trucks and get sh*t thrown at you.

Yeah, me too. Everyone hunts around here. Camouflage is definitely the gear of choice around these parts.

My wife laughed at me one day as I walked out the door on a cold Saturday morning. She said my balaclava was scrunching up my face and I looked ridiculous. I had to let her know it is function not form when it comes to the cold. But then again she is cold when it gets below 80. Need to stay warm no matter how it looks.

Who cares? I've had people laugh at my getup before, and I can't blame them. I'm sure I look like tweedledum in my winter riding gear, with suspenders and hitched-up fleece pants. But it works for me, and if some idiot with a hoodie wants to snicker let them. Sticks and stones, you know.

they would leave you alone if you carried your hunting rifle
You'd think so, wouldn't you? But I've run into cagers who get uppity even when I'm en route to the range, carrying multiple rifles.
