Just a note about using paint codes as gospel for color match. When I was a volunteer firefighter, I was on the purchase committee for a new truck. When the truck was nearing completion, the project manager called us to confirm our paint choice. We checked the purchase orders from our previous truck purchases and gave him the paint code. He called us back and said there were three different shades for the same paint number. He sent us samples so we could pick the one that matched our other trucks. They weren't just slightly off, where you could confuse one for the other, they were three distinct colors. One had an orange tint, like a ripe tomato, one was darker, like blood red, and the third was neutral, like on a Coke can. We had several people look at the samples in daylight with the other trucks and they consistently chose the same one. When the new truck arrived, it looked just like the others in the station. I know the color of the fire truck is not a huge deal, as long as it's red, but when you are keeping it for 20+ years, you don't want it to be an annoyance every time you see it roll out of the station.

Totally agree with this. Even when trying to just touch up though, it’s important to get a sample with some reasonable assurance that you’re on the right track. Spraying over the correct color primer base makes a big difference. Out in the garage I have somewhere near 10 different shades of orange. Still no winner.

I am going to get a sample of the color Rob mentioned, and spray it out over a dark red oxide primer base, about the closest match to the brown colored primer used on orange Colnagos of the early ‘70’s.

Just trying to find a reasonably priced source. The ~$40 charge for the touch up paint I found so far seems a bit excessive for the supplied volume.

The primer, in my opinion….HUGE.

Alfa AR 501, Alfa red!.

When used with light grey primer which is what people use these days, it looks pinkish.

Back then on both cars and bikes (vespa too) the primer was a brown/rust color which deepens the color. Between alfas, vespas, lambrettas and Ducatis, I have a lot of AR 501.

Heck, I think I'll paint the Kitchenaid Mixer today.

Has anybody painted a frame in LAN211?

I'm contemplating repainting a 1988 Corsa Extra frame as a tribute bike rather than replica. Thought I might go a metallic Molteni for something different. I'll build it with a Record 8 speed groupset with Ergo levers.

Color spectrometers will get you as close as possible, as long as you have a good source of the original.

...pearlescent finishes like that are pretty easy to accomplish. It's usually done with an overcoat to the color coat, using a pearlescent transparent enamel. Then a clear Urethane over everything. Testors used to make and sell one that works pretty well.

I have a Colnago (1972) getting painted right now in Eugene. I've seen the color (Lancia 211). It is perfect.

Waiting for it to cure enough for last wet-sand then clear coat and finally application of the decals, which back then were placed over the clear coat. (according to Colnago historian and decal maker, Greg Softley)

Most of the cars pictured are "Fulvia HF"s of sorts, which makes sense as the color is also marked "HF". "HF" was the motorsport division of Lancia ("HF" meaning "High Fidelity") which ran the highly successful works rally team (won the constructors world title in 1972 with Kallström, Munari and Lampinen)
This outfit produced roadgoing motorsport-ready versions for customers.
From the Fulvia model, there were versions with the 1,2l, 1.3l and later 1.6l engine, and these came without bumpers, but with improved HP and some weight saving measures. The 1.6l also had bigger inner headlights which earned the car the nickname "Fanalone".

But you are not wrong about the surplus bumpers, because many Fulvias were customized to look like an HF.


About the color, this source

says "LechlerColour 8072" for the "Giallo HF", and "LAN211" is refereced as being "1971 Giallo Gold". Giallo meaning yellow - maybe there is an error here. Or in the catalogue pictured above...

Not sure if you read the whole thread. I took apart the three versions of Molteni, Kessels, DeRosa and Colnago and color sampled from under the head tube on the fork.

Yes, I did... my comment was that you won't get any closer than that in the auto paint world. Your results are dead-on accurate using contemporary paint systems.

I stopped off at the automotive paint supplier, near where I work. It’s called Single Source, part of National Coatings and Supplies.

Way back when I was shooting cars, the company was called Mattos. They were big in the DC area, and had stacks of chip books going back quite a ways.

The guy at Single Source told me they threw out all the chip books when they took over. And they couldn’t find any sort of match for that Lancia color.

So I contacted Industrial Finishes. Will let you know what they say about shipping East.

I have people send me cell phone images to color match to.
I tell them that digital color has no fidelity.

I am reluctant to admit but while I can mix color to match pretty quickly- my eyes are now 45 years older- things shift. It is the High Chroma colors that require the most effort now.

Update: I spoke with Ron Brown at Industrial Finishes. He was stumped on finding a match for the Lancia Fulvia Giallo Olanda. Nice guy to have taken the time to call me back. Not all that common these days.

I mentioned Robvolz and his success in finding a match thru Industrial, Ron told me there are a couple different locations, and maybe one of the other locations might have had some luck finding the match.

nextdoor neighbor has a friend who just won an auction of a Lancia Fulvia. Interesting car. When he turned on the high beam headlights smoke emitted from under the dash.
should note it was a curious greyed off olive green. Was repainted but matched original in the engine bay and under the carpets.

I understand vintage British cars were early pioneers in the dash smoke release via button feature, but didn’t realize they owned licensing rights.
