Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was wondering how many of you have not crashed. After years of riding,I crashed last year.It evolved a cell phone, and yes it was stupid.Elbow, wrist injuries trying to catch myself, another stupid thing.Another friend who has logged thousands of miles, crash free, did the same thing with a cell phone, another with a water bottle

Never on the road bike in a lifetime of riding.

Maybe once every 50-100 miles on the mountain bike.

I've been in one crash. Rider one bike ahead in a tight paceline touched wheels with the bike ahead of him. Most of the group went down like dominos. Thankfully no injuries, bikes were a bit banged up but rideable after some minor adjustments.

FTR, many times on an MTB, but that presents a different set of challenges.

On a road bike, never, if you dont include the couple of parking-lot-clipless-pedal fiascos. There were more than a few close calls though. Going for a night time club ride in a few. My streak can end tonight...

There are two types of cyclists: Those who have crashed and those who will crash.

not me. i am the king of the one man crash. at least twice a year for some hare-brained reason, usual excessive speed + gravel, or leaves, or snow, or wet bricks. lately its been wild life getting in the way. nearly took out a squirrel yesterday and came close to getting sidelined by a deer on a dark MUP. scary.

I fell over trying to track stand at a red light yesterday. If that was my first crash ever, I would have been extremely disappointed.

Fell over rollin up to a stop sign once when I thought the car ahead was going to turn right but it delayed. I had to go to the shoulder but couldn't unclip in time and rolled down a small ditch. Yep....no damage to me or the bike but looked like a right tool to the other cars. At least one driver did stop and ask if I was okay.

I was just laughing at myself (or crying at my stupidity, i'll never tell)

I crashed twice, three times if you consider a <10mph fall without clipless pedals/shoes while reaching for my waterbottle on a (cross)windy day. I took a turn too wide, falling into the dirt on the side of the road, stayed upright for about 15ft and just ate it. This was about 35mph, but I had no road rash because I was wearing long sleeves and leg warmers.

Second crash was when it was still very cold out, and went under a bridge where there was ice. I knew it was there, and I saw it coming, so I slowed down to <10mph and went directly at it, my tires fell into a rut, and I fell. Also no road rash because I was fully clothed. Just a bruise on my left hip.

I haven't crashed on my current bicycle (2005).

The vast majority of my riding is solo, which helps.

I was passing a couple riding side-by-side on the local MUP last year. I rang my bell and gave them an "on your left." Of course one of them veered left and forced me into a tall wooden fence. I got a couple splinters but wasn't really going fast enough to do major damage.

I "crashed" once while testing out my clipless pedals in my garage.....had to wait an hour til my dad found me and helped me unclip.

My one and only serious crash happened about a month after I got my bike, lock the rear wheel and slid on some gravel while descending.

1x on the road bike during a race; destroyed my helmet and some road rash. I've fallen a handful of times on the cross bike riding trails or during races.

only crashes have been <5 mph due to pedal issues.

I've had several close calls and became a firm believer in replacing crappy/worn-out equipment to avoid any more.

This. I did lean to the wrong side once after unclipping 1 foot once at 0mph, but that was a day after i put on clipless pedals and I don't consider it a crash.

MTB = crashing for me. I suck at MTB.

I crashed once the first month I got my road bike. Hit a bump and lost control while going downhill. I managed to slow down the bike quite a bit before going down though. It still hurt. LOL Since then... about 2 years... I haven't crashed. I did have a close call with another cyclist today. He didn't bother to look while entering the path and almost took me out in the process.
