5ish hours yesterday with the team. started off with 50 minutes of steady, painful threshold climbing with a couple of jumps and no recovery in the middle.

in a strong field with a couple of 1s, and a good mix of experience, i decided to hit the climb with everything from the bottom, rather than sit around and wait for someone to attack, so i rolled off the front at the bottom, settled into a hard effort, hit every shallow section as hard as i could (at 160 i'm bigger than our other climbers, so figured i'd burn matches where i had the least disadvantage)

was fun to see the pack chasing me and slowly dwindling from 8 guys, down to 5 next time i looked back, down to 2, and then finally get passed at the 2/3rds mark by one guy, 130 pound cat 1 climber.

rolled over the top 2nd, then we regrouped for some fast downhill paceline work and another big (20 minutes but STEEP) climb before limping home.

have increasingly good feeling about my prospects this season.

Nice! It's good to establish a reputation as someone who can bring the pain. I tend to race in the same jersey for just this reason.

7 day total for this week is 7.5hrs, 130mi. Rest/sick week left my legs nice and heavy for today. 2hrs, with one hardish 5min section in the middle, avging 15.1mph @ 6% grade. Still have some crap in my chest, but the hard 5min got me to cough some of it up, which was nice.

Depending on how my chest feels tomorrow, either 2.5-3hrs z2, or 1.5hrs z1/2.

I waited for the weather to warm a bit and went out for 3 hours with an honest effort. I popped a sprint at the end to test the back and see what I could muster after pushing it a bit for 3 hours. Back feels ok, not totally loose yet. The jump/first-second went to 846w, then into the high 900s for a few seconds, and then downward as part of a 20" effort. I'll take that for now.

Out of curiosity...

Am I the only one here that trains primarily by PE? I find that with power I wind up obsessing over every little detail, and it just stresses me out too much. With HR, there are days when for whatever reason its either not responsive or wayyy too responsive so I wind up going too hard or too easy. Since I've been doing this whole training thing for nigh 5 years now, I do believe I recognize what z2, z3, z5 are supposed to feel like and simply do them on the days I am supposed to do them. Z2 now always feels like z2, same with z3 and z5 and I find that day to day my energy levels are higher, thus allowing me to do more volume and sharper interval workouts. HRM is still present, I just have it flipped upside down most of the time.

I can't be the only one that does this.

Less than 20 hours on the bike this month. If I'm lucky, I might break the 30 mark next month. Then.... FINALLY... a move.

Arizona, here I come. Screw the mid-atlantic weather.

About 13 hours this week. One new PR. TT on Saturday, 7.1 miles in 17:50 on a road bike.

Does anyone think this power zone distribution is askew? I don't have any particular goals in mind, just trying to get all around better performance.

More intervals today, legs were concrete halfway through because of yesterday but eventually loosened up. Recovery tomorrow morning, can't wait. I need it badly.

Another 4hrs, 300+ TSS, outdoors today...Did some sprints before a 2x20's and finished up 6x5min hill repeats...The repeats were not pretty and more of a sufferfest....Lots of arguing going on in my head between the legs and mind!

Had to deal with a cool damp east headwind and temps that never went above 3C

Definitely a hard day on the bike...

Can't believe I just finished with 13.5hrs for the week outdoors in March...One more week left in this block then recovery before we head to Georgia!

While demonstrating the official Marine Corps motto, Semper Fi, I've been demonstrating the unofficial motto, Semper Gumby. From August until now, I've changed final "next" locations a handful of times. I was originally supposed to be in Japan this past January. But for now - and assuming I actually get in a car and drive there in 28 days - I'll be stationed in Yuma, AZ beginning May 1st.

After a hellish winter of training and crazy work schedule, I'll be looking to race again come fall and will be riding RAAM again in 2012. 2011 is a wash for me all around.

It's been a winter of cross training, upper body, and adding 5-10 pounds. The bike and I are still friends, we're just not in a love affair quite yet.

I wouldn't say I do this, but I have hardly been paying attention to the PM this year. Basically, I'll do what you do, check my HR and PWR to verify that I'm right. I haven't done a powertest all year.

-40 tsb as of this morning. It was supposed to be another easy day but the legs wanted to go. Nearly matched best ever 20 mins during long lunch ride. Commuted home and the legs still wanted to rev. Rolled around the neighborhood and threw in 15 jumps over the course of an hour. Landed best ever sprint watts for everything from 0-20 seconds. I think I'm going to celebrate.

TKP - I usually use watts as more of a confirmation than anything else. If the legs felt good today but the watts sucked I would have thrown in the towel and rested instead. But my watts always suck so I guess it's all relative.

I could have written this myself. I train exclusively by PE for the exact same reasons. I go further in that I don't have any electronics on the bike at the moment (not even a cadence sensor). I've been training this way for about 3 years now. Amazingly I've become faster and have broken through a few plateaus by analyzing what my limiters were at the time and working on those areas. I'm not against PMs in any way. In fact I read this thread and others and try to duplicate many of the workouts by feel. I may not be doing them exactly right but they are still beneficial. You are not alone
