Trek 720 Refresh

Well, i finally pulled it out of the shipping box and did a refresh.. it might take a few rides to iron out the set up, and i still have to do the blue bar tape, currently considering cloth Nuebaum, question to the hive..
how do i affix the tape to get started down by the bar end shifters? TIA.

Pictures for your entertainment.

2 wheels on my wagon

perhaps this wasn't treated?

They were dry.

The infamous.

very low rolling resistance.

Not the original Rear Mech i don't believe, but seems to shift well.

How do i get the tape affixed here?

Its going to be a peach.

I've always started the tape with the shift levers out of the barends. I get just over a full wrap hanging off the end and a couple wraps on the bar to give it some stability, then tuck the overhang carefully inside the bar end and insert and fasten the shift levers. Be sure the housing end is seated in the lever before you start pulling tight on the tape to continue towards the brake levers, covering the housing.

I pretty much treat the mount of the lever like one might one of those expanding plugs. It is a bit trickier with the cable housing.

Single eyelets on the dropouts puts it a little later, probably post-1984.

I just start with the tape square with bars and after once around, angle the tape and off you go. No need to tuck it in. If you’re worried,a piece of electrical tape at the end to anchor the tape won’t show after the first time around.

For the 720 it's pretty easy to tell the years apart.

1982- baby poo brown no cantilevers
1983- baby poo brown with cantilevers
1984- Maroon with "Trek 720" decal on the down tube
1985- Maroon with just "Trek" decal on the down tube

Almost all (like literally 99.9%) 1985 Trek 720s were brazed in 1984- so they have 1984 serial numbers- despite being made for the 1985 model year.

Haha, I actually ask myself that (not that you were asking me).

But man, a 1985 720 in the 25.5" frame size???? Very rare bird!! Glad you have it--I've been very low key looking for one of these. Not that I am crying here with an '82 720 of that size as my very own (or a heavier but still good '85 620), but you know how it goes: once you find a good thing...

Yes you are correct it all started when my LBS has a red ( of course) Trek 720 in my wifes size all re-furbished and with straight bars and down tube shifters, we got it for my wife a few years ago, she likes the bike a lot, except the shifting was atrocious, so the young guy who built it had left the original rims and consequently the helico rear gear cluster, but had put on a modern chain, i think and 8 Speed chain, well it would hang up and not index down onto the cogs, so after lots of reading i get an NOS Helico freewheel and a NOS sedis chain, and it is vastly improved, the Huret was long gone also, but its good enough now for the type of riding we do, as the time and whilst working on it, i just admired the frame build, and i thought if i could get one of these i would snap it up, the 531 CS tubing. anyway i picked this up in a trade with Shoota, who posted on here, and yes you are correct when they do come up which is rare they are almost always too small for me, as we will be doing some light gravel riding i put on some treaded tires and we will give it a shot...

So I am sitting on, :-
1. A 1983 Trek 500 in mid blue metallic built with Trek 614 component set from a donor 1982 bike. ( lovely ride) Triple front chainset
2. The frame of a 1982 614 ( donor bike to the 500 ) in red.
3. A 1985 Trek 720 in Red mentioned in this build.
4. My wife's 1985 Trek 720 also in red straight bar.
5. My wife's 1982 Trek 613 in Silver only had 40 miles on it when we got it. Triple front chainset also.
6. A 1979 ish Trek 937 in Light Blue metallic to build.

So apparently i have started my own collection with out realizing.
