Camp 12-speed Cassette Compatibility with 9-speed Hubs

Sorry, that should read Campy. I am starting on another retro-mod project bike, a Picchio Special and have a set of 12-speed Super Record shifters and rear derailleur. I have a set of 9-speed Record hubs. I’ve read multiple places that 11-speed is backward compatible with 10 and 9. Are 12-speed cassettes interchangeable with 11? And if they are, they should be backward compatible with 9-speed, right?

Everything else on the build will be silver 11-speed Athena. All my other Campy equipped bikes are 11-speed and normally I’d just go the same route but I got an amazing deal on the barely used 12-speed stuff and just couldn’t resist.

Just wanted to follow and confirm that 12-speed cassettes will work with 9-speed hubs generally. I say generally because I had a set of 9-speed Record Titanium hubs and while the 12-speed cassette fit, you will need the cassette lock ring made specifically for that hub with a 26.0mm diameter. The non-Titanium 9-speed lock ring will not work, nor will any from 10, 11, or 12 speed cassettes which are 27.0mm. There are two versions, one for an 11-tooth cassette ring and another for 12/13 tooth.

I think you might get it to work but I would double check with Campy and confirm just to make 100% sure.

Oh, it works. Most 9-11 speed hubs it is a straight install. Only on the Record Titanium hubs do you need to make sure that you use the specific 26.0mm lock ring for those hubs.
