1 - start riding earlier in the year - didn’t really get going until May in 2023
2 - realize that it’s OK to ride less than 30 miles.
3 - rotate the herd - haven’t ridden anything except the Superior since 2017
4 - eat less cheese
5 - only drink on weekends

1. Figure out how to fabricate a Cyclo shift cable
2. RAGBRAI
3. Get my Baileigh bending jig set up so I can make some long overdue racks
4. Install mudguards on the ALPS tourer
5. Gather parts for my last remaining frameset, an A.N.T. from Mike Flanigan

1. Become a better climber so I am not always the slowest guy in the group every time the road tilts up more than about 1.5%. (Hey, a guy can dream . . . .)

And if that doesn't work:

2. Get better at not caring that I am always the slowest guy in the group every time the road tilts up more than about 1.5%.

It can be challenging to find inspiration for longer rides around here before May. Commuting and 20-mile max rides are usually the extent of winter riding for me.

1) Ride more, for sure. This usually coincides with not always building, Riddle... Alas, I am no parts rearranger for nothing. Perhaps, with increased age, comes increased contentment in certain things, for whatever reason or reasons. In this case, it's four superbly-equipped Treks that exhibit exemplary qualities and pair very well with me.
2) N-3 before N+1. Somehow, as of this writing, I have sold three bikes in the last three to four weeks, in this glacial bikes sales climate. Oh, and a frameset. 2020 was a banner year for sales, and I got to one bike (my '74 Paramout) before swapping that frame for my '85 620, and now I have four keeper Treks, outfitted to the nines.
3) More vintage Treks, because I love them so. I'd like a canti-equipped 720 from '83-85, with '83 being my preferred due to classic lugwork and paint colors. A 730 or 750 would be awesome, even if I am very happy running frames with large tires.
4) With #1, riding with bike friends. If there is anything that living in a ~25k person town outside of Portland has taught me (via observation), is that I feel a connection with fellow two-wheeled brethren whenever I see them commuting on busy roads in this rubbish weather. I may be many things, but am for sure a cyclist.
5) Being ok with 50 mile or less rides. Sure, I did just over 70 miles in a day two years ago, but not comparing my present physiology with those with better knee genetics is a good thing, and I am just so grateful to be able to bike and enjoy climbs and out-of-saddle efforts and high speed downhill descents.

Ok, I'll play.

1: Ride more miles than I have each the last couple of years. Should be easy now that both knees were replaced the year.
2. Get back to routinely climbing in the mountains. I only did Snowbasin once last year, pathetic.
3 Have at heart attack going up Powder MT at least once this coming year.

4. End the year with fewer bikes than I begin it.
5. Don't die while riding.

As it looks like I am not going to get my new Columbus Max fork before Christmas my first c&v task of 2024 will be to add that to my ti Merckx and finish its conversion from a double to a triple.

Thin the herd and try to then stick to a nightclub style policy of no more incomings unless there's outgoings first.

Ride a minimum of 7500 miles as half of a 2 year 15000 mile target.

Dont't crash, I just don't bounce anymore so crashes these days mean extended periods off the bike, which is best avoided.

Might have a family trip to South of France in April/may with my non cycling mother and sister, but I've been granted a few days cycling so aim to cycle up and down some epic mountains in the Pyrenees.

Clean up my garage so that I am able to find all the bike parts and tools that I know are buried in there somewhere (not to mention all of my woodworking and vintage car repair parts and tools).

1. Get in more bike touring with my buddies, most of which I met through BF.
2. Double the amount of torching in my hobby job.
3. Stop staring a the pile of tubes sitting in a cardboard box and actually build myself a new gravel frame.
4. Keep the Atelier clean and organized. Yeah, right.
5. Sell off some of the bikes and frames in my inventory.

Ooh, fun! Mine:

1. Build up the four or five frames I have waiting their turn
2. Sell all the bikes smaller than 60 cm.
3. Acquire no additional frames or bikes.
4 Ride more miles than I did in 2023.

I fully expect to break resolution three soon after the start of the new year. Maybe I should add 'get psychiatric counseling' to that list.

Fully agree on all but 1,2 and 3 so 25% success would be fantastic.

I have been blessed with a dozen bins of inner tubes to be tested and patched if needed, five bins of saddles for re-covering, a couple dozen wheels that need truing, cleaning, or dismantling, and a slightly overflowing box trailer of classic C&V bikes in need of refurbishment or passing along to another person or organization for resurrection. And all this in the face of a professional schedule that looks awful busy from tomorrow morning through some time in late spring. But I suppose I'll just take it one tube, saddle, wheel, or bike at a time.

Sell a few so I can finance and have space for more projects that include my frame repainting. At least one vintage bike tour, Solvang Century, do some rides/climbs out of Lone Pine and Bishop CA, Mammoth Gran Fondo for my 70th birthday and organize a vintage bike show/swap/ride at the US Bicycle Hall of Fame. Attend as many local monthly vintage rides with C&V guys and the Classic Rendezvous group as I can schedule. Oh yeah, also attending the Auburn IN, Auburn Vintage Bike show.

Right, we are talking about 'resolutions', which should be the equivalent of 'suggestions' or 'desperate hopes' at best.

I would consider 25% to be ideal. My bar is probably lower. I'll aim for around 7% success, and will 2 resolutions, that's a fraction of only one seeing any possible improvement

Ride my bikes as much as possible; finish the projects waiting in line; downsize by selling or donating bikes that aren't being ridden and that can be passed on.

  • Plan a lot of rides with mrs non-fixie
  • Keep the acquisition of bikes, frames and parts to a practical minimum
  • Get tickets for the RetroRonde, Eroica Germania and L'Eroica in Gaiole
  • Sell a few bikes or frames that don't fit anyway to keep up appearances and create room for the aforementioned acquisitions

1. My plan is to dig through the mountain of Campy stash that came in over the last two years and refurbish them for re-use by C&V folks.
2. Ride a bit more and be more aggressive about being back on the road bike.
3. Be a bit more involved in the job of being a Collegiate Golf Coach (which is the actual job!) Smiles, MH

Take some cycling-oriented trips for good cycling locations. Such as the Natchez Trace, Blueridge Pkwy or even the Pacific Coast Highway.

This year has been rough recovering from prostate cancer - so not much riding. I'm going to try getting back to my riding levels before my diagnosis as my stamina improves.
And. I need to build new wheels- replace those 28 hole Mavic Open Ceramics (wearing out) with something else.
A Happy and Healthy New Year to all of us C&Vers and the families that understand
