Maryland / Baltimore area commuters

Hi everyone, I am thinking about taking a position within my company in white marsh, and I live in Abingdon. Via GPS it is about a 14 mile ride each way, and Google maps suggests that I take Rt 40 since MD designated the wide shoulder as a bike lane. I was wondering if anyone here had experience with this stretch of road and could tell me how it is for commuting? The days I drove down it I rarely if ever saw anyone cycling on it. Also in some parts the shoulder disappears and becomes a weave lane for the highways. Another option would be taking rt.7, Philadelphia rd but i don't know how friendly it is for cyclists. Thanks for sharing your experiences and knowledge.

I've never ridden in the area, but looking at Google Maps, I'd opt for Philadelphia Road, with hi hiz and lots of lights. Pulaski Highway looks sketchy, with higher speed traffic. You may want to check Strava and see if others use that route.

Philadelphia Rd route would definitely be the route I would ride first, judging from google maps. It is in the middle of two higher speed higher volume highways that would seem to appeal to most auto drivers in a hurry. Also, the portions of Philadelphia Rd I viewed on google maps have a nice bike lane. Seems much preferred over riding on the side of Route 40 even though it has a nice, wide shoulder.

Oh hey - I used to live up there as well! First in Laurel Valley, then once I left home my parents moved to Cokesbury Manor before moving south. I think I would rather take 7 than 40. Or at least hop over to 7 from 40 once you pass 24. Might be you could ask Dick Schwanke for his opinion - I'm sure you've seen him around! He rides everywhere, almost 100% of the time.
