In light of the new good ebay thread, the opposite from on here.

Had a recent transaction here that has gone horribly wrong, not going to call it out specifically here but am wondering what the collective thinks.

I know there's no real recourse here and hate to bring this up but its not the first time, it is a far bigger, more $$$$$$ situation than ever before.

Would be more than willing to PM about it if anybody wants to.

TIA, Van

Yeah I always add a big leap of faith on deals like this knowing full well it is usually not going to be what you hope for.

This is an epic fail all the way around.

I've had deals gone bad to one degree or another with eBay, Craigslist, with friends, people I didn't know...

For the vast majority of deals, however, things have gone just fine. There's always a risk when you do business with another person, eBay ain't no better or worse. The percentage of deals gone bad online for me have been in the low single digit on a percentage business.

Call it shrinkage, and deal with it.

Agree on most of this.

Usually do, this one is far too egregious for all that.

Here's a rant I posted on Farcebook in 2020:

Tale of first world woe here: I had a ebay deal go squirrely with with some knucklehead in Finland. Sold me the wrong parts for for a precision tool, and then suggested I should cut up some beer cans to shim it to close enough and a steady stream of piss off dude. Then the virus hit. Ebay imploded. The seller ghosted. The only replies I got from Ebay where that I was a bad person and I should go away and leave them alone.. After a dozen emails I got a Oops, Sorry about that, here's a refund. Huge time suck, but hey I'm stuck at home.
So I leave the seller a negative feedback including Howdoyoulikethoseapples? I immediately hear from the seller with a long plea to save his reputation, he had to travel, was out of the country had no internet service, was contacting me at great risk, yada yada... And sent me a scan of a convenience store receipt to prove that he was out of country.
The receipt was for beer bought at a Spanish beach town. Apparently Finnish knuckle heads also do spring break during a Pandemic. I hope he saved the empties for shim stock.

We've all been there to some extent. Hope it works out for you but I suspect you'll have to accept the loss and move on, knowing that you'd never do the same sort of thing to someone. Small consolation, I know.

The ride was the Wed nite races at Mt.Tabor in their 70th year, great fun to watch and sweetheart pro Clara Honsinger to boot.

We won't actually be going there, suffice to say it is a $1K deal that dug another $2.5K hole.

Tx, we'll see.

There's a path, not one I have ever wanted to take but this may be the time.

Is this of the magnitude what Gridplan endured?

He did get to see a payback of sorts, self inflicted and noticed by the DOJ

I've had a few eBay deals not work out in various ways, and am dealing with one presently. The past ones were resolved and I wasn't hung out to dry, thankfully. This one is a case of a good deal on a 'new' item, with only shop wear on the box it came in due to it being old or whatever. It's electronic, and it's bike related, and...the bulletproofness of mechanical shifting and braking is wonderful, and you'd think I'd only stay there forever. But...Di2. Looks amazing, shifts amazing, it's draw is undeniable (to me, again). I've had great experience with it in the past, but now I am dealing with the stark reality of "not the latest version of X" and "potentially faulty unit" (what I just bought--didn't want to burn time going to bike shops and spending hourly repair cost times...oops!) and all I need is "just one thing" to work out and it's theoretically fine. Options are very thin on the ground. Basically two. We will see how that goes. I am sorry for your current (and spendy) crisis!

I feel there's value in telling the story, at least. You can always omit the other parties name if so compelled but it may serve as a cautionary tale for others with future transactions.
