Make your case: Which of these four gruppos?
Thinking of my up-coming purchase and I'm trying to analyze all the components that will go into my next bike. I've done all the ON PAPER analysis that can probably be done. What's left? The functionality and the intangibles. And I'll admit that I have no Campy or Dura Ace experience of any kind.
On paper, here's how the four gruppos stack up . . .
Ultegra -- $620 2584g
For $500 more (nearly double), Campy Chorus. And I'll save a whopping 230g! (More than $2 per gram!)
If not Chorus, it's Dura Ace. Just $30 more! And I save 52g. (Wow! Those grams aren't much more than 50 cents each over Chorus! But still about $2 over Ultegra.)
If not Dura Ace, go with Record! It's only another $500. And I'll save another 125g! (Yep. Those grams cost $4 each over Dura Ace.)
ON PAPER, it seems that Shimano Ultegra is a tremendous bargain. It is true that it weighs 9/10 of a pound more, but it also costs just a little more than 1/3 of what a Record setup costs. It's also the gruppo that I have lots of experience with. I understand the sex appeal differences . . . but are there functional differences that make Chorus, DA & Record really worth that much more money? (And, for that money, wouldn't the weight savings be more valuable in a lighter wheelset?)
For those with experience with Campy and DA, what besides sex appeal makes them worth the money?

I debated between Ultegra and Centaur for a while and went with Ultegra for the following reasons:
I already have one bike with Ultegra and like it.
My other wheels are Shimano compatible.
I can shift w/o thinking about how, and didn't want the learning curve.
Shimano stuff is just easier to find.
The Centaur had the following going for it:
I like the Campy look better
The shifters seem comfortable in the store (but never rode them)
Can be repaired.
Good luck with your choice.
Oh, and Tom at GVHbikes.com took good care of me at prices equal to PBK and you can customize the parts (I wanted the compact ultegra crankset...).

It seems that you're strictly basing your decision on weight... so you should be getting Record.
Otherwise, go test ride bikes with the different groups and see which you prefer.

the searches are very vague, and often turn up nothing specific.

Pretty soon I might need to do a little updating. I noticed that there is a little play in my guide gears in my rear derailer, but its still holding strong. I plan on buying a new bike soon, so I doubt I am going to spend any money on it.
I am thinking buying a nice carbon frame and hanging some Ultegra on her.

ultegra shifters or any shimano above sora/tiagra for that matter isn't going to break down, or atleast not for a hell of a long time so there is no need to have the "rebuild" function of campy

Would love to have the coin for all Chorus, but the centaur stuff is really very good.
