I've been monitoring my BP for the last few weeks, to see how well-controlled it is. Short answer - could be better. Also could be worse! But also reading up on more current thinking on hypertension. For example, caffeine. When I was first diagnosed 15 years ago, caffeine was considered a No-No. Now? Mayo Clinic and others say "See if it makes any difference", so I did. Been drinking coffee the last half hour. BP still the same. Having done this several times, I'm reasonably confident of the results. The other thing is that when I got the home BP monitor, the recommendation was not to take repeated measurements for some reason, but now I read you should take several measurements each time you measure.

Its interesting when you see the old charts vs today charts. What was considered boarderline terrible 30 years ago, Is almost considered normal today.
I wonder if that is because American as a whole has gotten unhealthy. So the bar moved?

Back in my youth (late 20's) I was in my best condition ever. I would ride my bike 3 days a week to a workout class at the junior college, then run a 5K, workout, and ride home. The ride was from sea level to the top of a hill in Redwood City up a very steep street. My highest heart rate was maybe 172. Later in life as a mailman, I walked well over 50,000 miles, and my resting heart rate was in low 40's, sometimes high 30's. Then a cardiologist found that my heart stopped for up to 4 seconds at a time while resting and put me on a pacemaker. After a while I convinced them to raise my max ceiling up to 150 to aid in riding my bike. A couple of days ago I did the Kilo track race in my Wahoo Systm trial and my heart got to 156.

No. I never would have noticed except one Christmas, my daughter was laying with her head on my chest and exclaimed "you're heart is stopping!". That's when I went to see the doctor. I feel like the pacemaker has totally screwed up my conditioning, but then again, maybe I'm alive because of it?
