10 speed 105 to new Tiagra

10 speed 105 to new Tiagra
Hi folks- my current ride has 105 10 speed shift/brake levers, which have been great but the shifters are wearing out. I’d like to just get new shifters, and discovered that Tiagra is the only 10 speed offering from shimano anymore. My question is if this would be a downgrade-ish move or if the current Tiagra is at least more of a lateral switch from circa 2005 105. Thanks.

The problem with the new 4700 (which is older now) is that it is more than likely an 11 speed pull ratio so while it is a 10 speed group it is not compatible with 10 speed stuff. I would generally stick with 105 but the newer Tiagra isn't absolutely terrible. However I would probably just upgrade to 11 speed at this point if you enjoy the frame and like the bike generally go for a nice upgrade.

Since you have the older style 10sp, you could use these shifters- a pair is $89 and they work well. The shifting style is slightly different from Shimano, but it is easy to learn.

I would just upgrade to 11. Shifters, rear derailer and cassette and chain. You can likely get away with using the existing crank and front derailer. If it’s a rim bike system (likely as it’s 10 spd.) the brakes are used as well, makes it easy.

Microshift/Micronew FTW. You won't have to whack the brake lever sideways ever again.

The microshift option mentioned by several folks should be the most cost-effective option.
The upgrade to 11-speed option is more spendy, but probably worth it if you find the drivetrain parts on sale and you DIY.

Thank you for the opinions! I wouldn’t mind going 11 but it would mean new rear wheel as mine has an originally 9 speed ultegra hub. I will see about the microshift option.

Another option is the older Tiagra, 4600 series. They use the same shift cable pull ratios as the other Shimano 10 speed road groups.

But if you are doing that just look for a 105 or higher. If I am going with old stuff I wouldn't go down in quality but either stay the same or go up.

Like others have said, check out Microshift shifters. I actually prefer them quite a bit to Shimano. Their shifting design is much better, IMHO. And they work very well.

I have a 15 y.o. 105 10 speed group set and a new microshift AdventX. In some ways I prefer the Microshift lever. It isn’t as buttery smooth but I prefer the ergonomics and accuracy of the Microshift.
it’s to the point where if I had to replace the 105 I’d swap to the Adventx

In the grand scheme, the Tiagra RD-4700 isn't a lot of extra cost compared to the STI's alone. And a front DR might be needed too. But I'd wait to see how well the ST-4700 did or didn't shift the FD-4600. Though maybe you others know for certain.
Even with the cost of two DR's added in, It'd be worth it to me to have the newer and so far most current Shimano 10 speed road stuff on my bike. I never got use to seeing all the cables flying everywhere. Aesthetics are much nicer with them taped to the bars. IMO

Update w/ pics!
Welp, finally got around to installing the micronew shifters. Figured it would be a good opportunity to overhaul the drivetrain. Shifts perfectly on the stand, we’ll see how it goes on the road. Thanks again for the recs!
