30 years
Last day of summer 78, my Jr. year in college. I could barely walk, much less run cross-country, due to overtraining on the crappy running shoes of the 70's. End of that dream of being the next Pre 
At the invitation of a couple people I met at school went out on about a 20 mi road ride. Loved it!.
30 years later and in spite of a few breaks here and there I'm still on 2 wheels. Went out today and did 30mi solo to mark the occasion. A perfect morning, light breeze 70F and sunny. Pulled in the driveway with 30.01 on the computer, a good omen for sure!
Love this sport.

It's dismaying how people can achieve the appearance of great age when they are marginally older than a kid like Pcad. 
I graduated in '73, and ran against Dave Wottle in HS.

I've been down here (Schertz) for about a year and a half and have to say the riding is awsome. 5 min from the house North or East and im out in the boonies. Good pavement and just enough rollers to make life interesting, you can ride as hard or easy as you want.

Greetings fellow Boomer. I grew up bicycling (my dad was a bike commuter in the 60's, and our Sunday "Family Day" was alway bicycling around Green Lake in Seattle when the weather was good) but really got into it when my parents bought me a 10-speed for getting around college in 1973. 35 years later I still ride almost every weekend during the school year (I'm a teacher) and much more in the summer. I take a self-supported bike tour almost every summer. This past summer I did the Northern Tier from Omak, WA to Glacier National Park, Montana. I've had lots of other recreational passions over the years - volleyball, kayaking, backpacking, motorcycling - but bicycling seems to trump them all.
My ex-bike-commuter dad is now 96 and going strong. Fully lucid and fully capable of taking care of himself. (He even toyed with the idea of getting back on his bike this summer, though my brothers and I felt compelled to talk him out of it. His balance isn't what it once was, and what if he falls?) I'm planning on being like him when I grow up.
When I retire in a few years at age 65 I can really start riding!

Those cheap shoes of the 70's had been around for quite a few years previous. I gave up running 4 years earlier than you but only took up cycling 18 Years ago.

Greatest advancement? Quality synthetic Chamois. If your *** is comfy you can ride all day, shifting, carbon fiber, Tires and all the rest are just fluff next to that. (I'de put clipless pedals 2nd).
Worst thing still with us? Well I do have to go to work on Monday. Next to that flats.

So thinking about what to do for 40. This year I've been hard at work trying to turn an old sprinter into a TT rider. That has been a fun challenge and involves a lot of cool gear. But it has made riding and training meaningful. May take all that work back to the Track with a couple Pursuit rides (Last time on aero bars on a Track was 1996).
Not sure yet how to usher in a new Decade.

Coming up on 45 years. Still riding consistently & had pretty good fitness this spring. Work has had me backing off a bit over the summer.
My current project is a 90's build, putting some old 8 speed components that have been sitting around to use (DA7400 on a Trek 5500 frame). It's been fun tracking down the few things that I'm missing. Considering getting back on the TT bike, a couple of years to get ready for 70+.
