Another Reason to Bring a Chain When on Tour
I'm riding to work now and decided to use my Fuji Touring loaded up to see how it handled fully loaded. This involved bring a spare chain as its been recommended to me and its weighs all of 250g.
My route involves a desolete bike path and behind a tree popped out two guys straight from the movie Deliverance.
Fortunately I had access to my side pannier which had my chain. Lets just say the SRAM 11 speed chain may not weigh much but it looked ominous enough that they left me along. The only down side is I lost a bloody power-link in my haste in opening the package.

I always have "Halt" dog repellent I can grab really fast, it will work on people also.... Just hope the wind is blowing away from you. LOL!!! That's how I know it will work on people.

Ha! So you fend off certain robbery and possible sexual assault, but at what cost??? Now your hands are all gross with that heavy chain grease and you can't even use the chain on the bike if you wanted to without the master link.

Don't you loop your bike chain through the 5 pound Kryptonite NY U-Lock, so you have a good swinging projectile, or you can throw and retrieve the lock?
Of course, you could do the same with the Kryptonite Lock/Chain combo.

I'm sure those hillbillies are home tellin' all their kin about the crazy-ole, chain-wielding, bike-nut, they saw on the trail.

I have an example that might have been menacing, but I didn't really figure it out until later:
- cycling down the Pacific coast and on a bike path passing through San Diego
- came around a bend and noticed two guys off to my right
- had already passed them when I thought, "wait did one of those guys have a gun"
- didn't really go back to figure things out
Perhaps I have slow reaction times, but my example situation was fairly ambiguous. It could have been me stumbling on a scene of one person threatening another - or it could have just been something I misinterpreted and was all innocent. In the split seconds I determined it wasn't directed at me and I had already passed before fully analyzing the scene. My spare chain would typically go in right front pannier and would be close to the bottom because there is no reason to access it frequently. In bear country, I'd be far more likely to have bear spray at top of my handlebar bag - but not in a place like San Diego. If I was close enough that a chain could make a difference - then the last thing I would do would be fumbling around in a front pannier.
