Cost of bottom bracket replacement

The bottom bracket on my LeMond needs replacement (there was discernible play in the bearings). Can anyone give me an idea of how much a shop will charge me to do the job?

An old Octalink? Pull and replace crank and BB, probably at least $100 if all goes well. Maybe ask about upgrading to a newer Hollowtech and crank, easy to DIY next time.

cost of a new Bottom Bracket is between $20 and $150, depending on type and quality..
labor rates vary from shop to shop, region to region, and between a "BikeShop" that won't allow you in their repair area and a "Co-op" that will lend you a stand, tools, and advice.

The bike is a 2002 with Shimano 105.

Shimano has had quite a few versions of their 105 group. Spanning many years and old and new sometimes overlapped on new bikes. The actual version/model/part numbers are often stamped on the back side of cranks, ders, brakes and other parts. These model numbers give others far more information than just saying it's a105 "thing" from a 2002 bike.

Having said that: assuming no unusual or complicating aspects the labor to remove and reinstall a BB on most bikes should run $30-$60 at a LBS (actual amount will reflect that area's cost of living). The BB part cost might be as little as $20 or more depending on what is actually available (and there could be different grades of BBs that will work, interchange fully and have their own costs). Do know that when taking stuff off a bike or doing repairs often will expose other issues. On a 20+ year old bike I would expect this possibility and would hope that the LBS would do an initial assessment on the bike's overall condition before any decisions are made. Andy

So Octalink. They are still made in both double and triple crank versions. $35-$45 for the part. $40 labor, maybe less. So $70 to $100.

If you want to do it yourself, you need the standard Shimano cartridge BB socket and a Octalink compatible crank extractor and an 8mm allen wrench. Don't worry about torque wrenches.

About a 20-minute job with the right tools, and minor tweaking for the front derailleur. There are other brands and models that will fit and cost less.

Understood. Thank you for the information, and it's succinctness. And for omitting any admonishment.

According to this, only ONE of the (15) 2002 Lemond models have a 105 group.
It lists a (105) BB-5500 w/118.5mm length.
Look on the inside of the Right crank for a model#
As mentioned, that looks like an Octa Link style.

That is the triple model I mentioned. All you need to check is the number of chainrings.

Check with your local shop for actual prices but an average B.B. is $20-50 but labor can vary quite a bit depending on the market and the shop. Sometimes a better shop will charge more but in the end you are hopefully getting better mechanics and service. On rare occasions people whine about our shops prices but we do really good work and we aren't a discount place we are or try our best to be professionals and we run it more like an automotive shop and will generally work on anything which most shops won't do. However do your research and find a shop you like and it will pay off in the end.

Our charge in the shop I work at is $70 parts and labor for a cartridge BB. Or may more if the owner has a boat payment!

How can you have a fixed parts and labor cost when BBs range from $20 to $200?

I checked our prices and an Octolink would run about the same.

This is not a hard job if you have the tools and youtube, but it's also a matter of time.

I had a situation where I simply could not remove a seized BB....finally broke down and paid my LBS $20 to remove and install a new one (I had the new part already). This is a single-person run shop though, so yea, he's extra cheap.

I should have just had him do it for me from the start!

I wouldn't bother paying shop labor for something as trivial as this. It's a 10 minute home job. Instructions are on YouTube, which is better than any of us can explain here using words.

About 10 years back, one of my bikes' BB started crunching, and it was seized up tight. My LBS babied that thing for a month -- penetrating oil, whack, more oil, let it sit overnight. Finally got it fixed! Two weeks later, the other bike had the same thing, except it took six weeks to break loose.

I paid for the new bottom brackets, and labor was included since I paid list price, more than mail-order, for the hardware.
