Rear rack for a 29er recommendation

Hello all,

Finding a rack locally that fits my Salsa El Mariachi has become more difficult than expected.
I am planning on doing a offroad multiday self-supported tour in a couple of months using this bike, but the rack that I used on my Salsa Ala Carte (RIP) does not fit due to the large tire.
Also, I am worried about fitting the rack with a disc brake. I have a set of Zefal low riders that I have used succesfully for commuting with this bike, disc brakes and all. It came with a set of small metal cylinders that allow to bolt the rack away from the frame to get around the brake caliper (the cantilever effect does worry me, though).

I would like to hear your rack recommendations and your success stories about rear racks on 29er mountain bikes, and where to find them online...

Thank you.

This is the bike:

(it will be outfitted with a 2x9 drivetrain for the tour )

Tubus Disco

https://www.tubus.com/index/lang/en/r.../artikel/Disco

Buy it from Wayne at www.Thetouringstore.com

If it doesn't fit using your eyelets (if any) it also mounts with a QR like OMM. Also its made out of CroMo stel, not aluminum.

I haven't used mine yet, but it looks sweet and is with Tubus German engineering.

Sorry about the lack of pictures, but I have front and read Old Man Mountain Sherpa racks on my El Mariachi I use for touring and everything else. The racks have platforms on top and certainly aren't low riders up front. I know I've had a Geax Saguaru 2.2 in the back with a Weirwolf LT 2.55 up front with both racks on. I may have also have Planet Bike Cascadia 29er fenders too.

I'm running a Topeak Explorer rack on a Gary Fisher 29'er. I'm able to run a non-disc rack since GF mounts the disc caliper in the triangle between the seatstay and the chainstay, but they also make a disc version that stands off that I'm running on a GF 26" hardtail.

Run it with a Topeak MTX trunk bag and Trek Interchange Panniers. They will work together or individually.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replies. I would need the disc version in order to use the frame braze-ons. It does look like that design would put a lot of stress on the bolts when fully loaded... Any issues with bolts breaking?

Yes. Rack bolts often (in the sense that is one of the things that tourers experience) shear off. You should carry extras in your tool kit.

i had the mtx explorer on my fisher (until the frame broke) with nano 2.1s on there. i moved it over to the wife's disc bike and am looking for a new rack for my rawland that i'm using 29er wheels on it.

anyone use the axiom or jand brand of racks on their 29ers?

and i would have to think that the op should look toward the steel racks for an offroad trek like that. nice mariachi!!

What are some brands that make steel pannier racks?
I can only think of Tubus, Surly and Nitto... any others?

Old Man Mountain it is.

I did find a shop here in Madrid that stocks OMM, Tubus and Topeak. Tubus Disco does not fit. Neither does the Topeak Disc Explorist. The only rack they had in stock that fit my bike was the OMM Sherpa Disc.
I am not 100% happy with my choice of rack because:

-1st: it was damn expensive.
-2nd: it does not use the frame eyelets. It seems like it is going to be a pain to fix flats.
-3rd: still fairly tight clearance. I know that OMM makes longer "plates" to fit 29er but I have a smaller tire that will yield a bit more clearance than the 2.55 WTB's

Thanks for your replies and words of wisdom.
