Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Protective tape made for bike frames?

I noticed today on my bike there was a piece of clear tape that looked as though it was peeling away, so I helped it along and ripped it off. I realized it was only on the side of the frame near the chain so I assume it was to protect from scratches or debris the chain might let off..... Kinda feel dumb for ripping it off now, but no biggie. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this stuff and if you use it on your bike.

most bikes come with it. its there to keep from scratching your frame as you figured out. mostly for chain suck where your chain could hit the frame. you can buy replacement tape and yes i use it on my bikes (the tape that came on it anyways)

Mine also came with some already installed and some on a sheet that I could add. My heels would kick the chainstay every so often and I ripped that one off once it started to peel. I bought another sheet from the LBS along with a Lizard Skin velcro chain stay protector. I have since concentrated on keeping my feet straight and probably don't need it any more.

Here is an example of what you are probably looking for Clear Chainstay

Mine even had extra little 1" square ones for the cables and ones specially made for the bottle cages.

Lizard skins makes nice clear tape for chainstays. It's meant to protect the chainstay from chainslap. You can also use 3M Plastic Clear tape. I had a buddy that would put the tape around the bottom bracket of his cross bikes. When he was ready to sell the bike, he'd just peel the tape off and it looked good as new.

Also check the bike section of ebay. A few sell kits of several pieces for cranks and different parts of the frame.

Huge rolls of clear contact paper are available at home depot or lowes for probably $5-$10. It'd do probably 1000 bikes, but you gotta cut the pieces yourself.

thanks guys, honestly I only ripped off a couple inches a good amount is still there, don't even know if I'm gonna bother replacing it. Knowing me and my OCD about my bike, I probably will.

I picked up a chain protector for my Surly Long Haul Trucker that is actually leather with an adhesive back. But to tell the truth, I think that a piece of electrical tape would work, too.

I use what hockey players call squeeky tape which is a clear, rubbery tape used to hold pads in place. It's comes on cheap rolls at any hockey shop and works quite well.

Clear packing tape is inexpensive and can easily be trimmed to fit.

My frame is steel and my right chain stay is chromed. No problems with chain slap for me.

Check out Veloskin. It is 3M made tape that they pre-cut so it will fit for your road bike. I have it on my bikes and it works great. I never have to worry about rocks or anything screwing my paint job.

I wouldn't recommend clear packing tape as that can be a pain to install and it is not as thick as the 3M tape.

I buy sheets of 3M backing Carbon Fiber Fabric from Carbon Mods and cut it to shape for protecting the frame from chain, cables and shoe.
This stuff is tuff and sticks great onto the chain stays and frame and looks good.
