With increasing fees Ebay is not what it used to be.
But there really isn’t a good alternative that I’m aware of.

Classic and Vintage Sales!
Mixed in with a healthy dose of good karma from giving away stuff, ensuring that I will get other stuff for free, and the Box o Crap and machining/brazing other parts for myself, I get by!

eBay. Seriously, there are things that will sell there that won't anywhere else, mainly because of the global marketplace. But I fully agree - I'd like to see a better competitor come in and wipe the 'Bay off the face of the earth.
OfferUp and Facebook Marketplace are ideal for flippity-dippity type bikes and other things. But never the specialist stuff.
C&V Sales is OK, but slow unless you have something desirable. Couldn't give away a '51 Raleigh through it, and I've had a decent repainted PX10 up for trade for ages. Can't beat the clientele though

I've had really good luck with C&V Sales, as both buyer and seller. Much more pleasant doing transactions with folks in this community versus EBay, etc...

I have not yet sold, but I plan to offer up some items soon here. I like the face to face aspect of this site. As far as ebay, though shipping has increased, as a buyer, it has not yet dismayed me. NOt sure that I will sell on there. I am not a flipper, but might need to reduce a bit.
And bikes are closely watched on FBMP. I no longer use craigslist as locally, people have become very rude and obnoxious.

eBay as a buyer, but...
I’m reluctant to try to sell anything again.
To the con artist who claimed they never received the Campagnolo peanut butter wrench or crank puller - I hope you get defrauded the way you ripped me off.
I saw how you obtained my items that eBay “refunded” all of “your” money on only to re-list the same items within days @ 3x the price. Very, very disappointing!
As a buyer, during Covid desirable NOS parts prices have gotten outa hand.

Oh I filed a complaint but the “buyer” prevailed because I did not pay the extra $0.75 for delivery confirmation and the buyer saw the loophole & exploited it.
This was a few years ago & @ that time eBay had not made delivery confirmation mandatory. I was inexperienced & for some trusting (naive) reason I thought everything would be fine which it was not since the buyer was a rip off artist.

The advantage of ebay is selling to a global market.
The disadvantage of ebay is the opportunity to be defrauded by the global market.
The fee structure isn't my problem - it's the managed payment system they just instituted. In order to sell there now, have to link to a checking acct, and ebay takes fees automatically before everything else. No thanks.

Ebay is, usually, the best place to find hard to find stuff. I do buy what I need but do so with great care.
As for selling, Ebay has screwed me, helping dishonest buyers, in the past. Sadly, for me in a horribly weak market area, Ebay is my second choice for selling stuff. Bike Forums is my first choice. Why?
Because when I sell, it is not just for the money. I sell to help others and I would rather help my on-line friends than strangers.

As for the checking account...ebay has had a couple of my cards on file for years now since I buy. Is it a big difference for them to auto deposit sales into my checking account?

The problem is that if someone hacks your ebay acccount, or if ebay itself gets hacked, instant access to your checking account. Again, no thanks.

If someone hacks my account or ebay itself right now, they have instant access to a couple credit cards.
Either situation is a complete mess. Im just not sure how one is viewed as acceptable but the other isnt.
Totally cool- everyone has a different level of risk comfort. I just dont see a significant difference between some nefarious group getting my check card and the nefarious group getting the account the card is linked to. They have access either way up until I shut it down.

Huge difference. If you use credit cards or paypal you are protected if you are hacked. If ebay can reach into your bank account your account could be emptied with no protection. If you get into a dispute with a disreputable buyer ebay can reach into your account and refund the buyers money even if you never get the goods back.

I can no longer use eBay because they permanently disabled my account. Evidently, I committed some offense to get my account suspended. What that offense was, I have no idea, but I can no longer buy and sell on eBay anymore. I tried contacting eBay to get a better understanding of what I did to get suspended but they would not discuss the matter with me. The only method for contacting eBay is through the online chat and the representative that I conversed with just told me that the decision was final and that they were unwilling to provide any other information. It's not a big loss for me as I've only purchased 2-3 items through eBay over the last year and I haven't sold anything in 4 or 5 years.
I've always hated the star rating system on eBay. Both buyers and sellers rely on this rating systems that, in my opinion, is completely riddled with the opportunity for gaming, dishonesty and fraud. I never had much of a problem with it because my personal volume of activity was so low that it didn't really matter. However, it seems like all it takes is a single buyer to be dissatisfied and give a seller a 1-star review and then that seller will suffer the consequences for quite some time. I sell more items on my local CL and from that experience I can definitely say that the customer is NOT always right. However, it seems that whenever there is a dispute with an eBay transaction that the default position from eBay is that the customer is right and there is no recourse for the seller to even begin to plead his/her case.

It’s just another example of a long line of ebay policies over the past decade or so to discourage low volume sellers.
I started using ebay when it was still possible to pay for purchases with money orders. I doubt I’ll stop any time soon.

I am not comfortable with their new policy of linking to my checking account as a seller. I'll still buy but FB groups, here and PL forums for now for selling.

I do most of my buying on Craig's list. Occasionally I will buy from eBay, but my LBS has a pretty amazing selection of C&V parts, generally at eBay prices, it's a lot quicker and I can check out the part before I buy (The mechanic also has his own collection, so if the shop doesn't have something, I might be able to get it from him directly). I've only sold on this forum. Generally I'll donate what I don't want/need, especially when I buy a donor bike, to the Silicon Valley Bike Exchange. There's a forum member that does a lot of builds for them and he is happy to get the parts.
